Extraction #101: another 16,210 kg of plastic out of the ocean to be recycled into durable, sustainable products so it never re-enters the environment again. What exactly do we do with the trash we extract from the Great Pacific Garbage Patch and rivers? Find out here: https://lnkd.in/er32-Y-q.

Ships offload rubbish before entering ports as the cost of clearing it at ports is costly. So incentivise the ships owners by giving them huge bins on bored & picking it up at ports. This can be done by companies in the recycling business. Also negotiate with ports to be environmentally friendly and charge nominal if the bins are off loaded by the private companies - if ports don’t contribute to sustainability than what good are they for- they too must play their part.

I hate to be that guy but is nobody else going to point out the obvious here? While it's certainly a great initiative to clean up the Earth's oceans and fight polution, part of this operation in the film was conducted onboard the Maersk Trader. This vessel is a 73m long tugboat powered by four MAN marine diesel engines putting out a combined 13,800bhp. According to the numbers I found it carries 1191 m3 of diesel fuel onboard. That's just over 1,000 metric tons of diesel fuel. The total haul of this operation was 16.2 metric tons to put that in perspective. Now consider the fact that we can see a second of the same class of ship involved so at least two 4600t, 73m long, 13,800bhp diesel powered boats each carrying over 1,000t of diesel fuel onboard were used to haul exactly 16.2t of plastic up. I'm all for championing proper green initiatives but this operation screams anything but green to me. I don't know how far away these ships sailed or for how long they were active but I wouldn't be suprised if more than 16.2t of diesel fuel was burned over the course of it.

Extraction! This is happening because a boy saw a trash bag that he thought was a jelly fish in the oceans off of Greece a decade or so ago. We have to remember, that your hearts are vast and resilient. Have the courage to follow it!

The Ocean Cleanup is great work and totally amazing , My issue is how do we create a change in our way of living so we dont keep throwing our waste into our waterways . We are poising our oceans and the life within them , which of course we then consume our own garbage

Thank you for what you are doing to help reverse the damage we have done. Feeling hopeless to effect change myself, while I do try, my hope returns knowing you are out there really making a difference.

Does this increase or decrease impact once you account for the diesel burnt and CO2 created to power the ship?

Is the overall environmental impact of this operation positive or negative? From experience I estimate that vessel consumes 11 tonnes of diesel a day. How many days did the operation take to remove 16 tonnes of plastic?

#MasterData has a principle of Cleanse-the-River-Cleanse-the-Ocean Same applies here... As long as trash continues to float out from dirty rivers, this will never solve the root problem. But nevertheless, I applaud these efforts. . .but who is paying for this?
