A few Friday thoughts... My conversation this week with the inestimable Hugh MacArthur kicked up a lot of compelling questions to chew on. Despite 18 months of steady interest rates, a steady macro environment and no recession to be seen, dealmaking is still down. (I may or may not have referred to this as "irrational conservatism" during our talk.) Consistent with pulse checks we've taken at other ILPA gatherings, LPs shared that—by and large—they're within comfortable distance of their allocation targets (although generally over allocated) and not yet overly concerned about this "distribution winter", for now. But, but, but...by this time next year the story will different for many, without any improvement in the exit environment. According to Hugh, fundraising won’t turn around until value in portfolios gets "unstuck," and it’s going to take partnership to get to a place of returned confidence. Two things he said really resonated here: Now’s the time for LPs to be asking managers, “What is your systematic approach for liquidating older assets in your portfolio in the right way, and how do you want to monitor and manage that together?” He also asserted that as an industry, we need to get “back to our roots” and figure out how to grow margins. Despite consistently underwriting deals to a margin expansion thesis, data shows 75% of deals aren’t getting any margin expansion on average. But there’s a delicate dance to do here, reconciling value creation with impact and industry reputation. We covered a lot of ground, but at the end of the day, Hugh says he’s optimistic that PE will innovate and adapt. I agree, and with that innovation comes the need for even greater communication—and partnership and alignment—to get back on the right path. Do you have your elevator pitch ready? 😝 How many times are you asked by someone what you do? Often this happens when you're in the elevator. Sometimes it happens when you're in line at the cafe. Or when you're on an airplane. You have to be ready to have an answer. Not just any answer, but one that causes intrigue. If I were to say I'm a financial advisor, guess what? Conversation is over...."oh, that's nice". 😌 But if I were to say the following: "I specialize in helping attorneys, and other professionals protect their most valuable asset to insure that they don't out live their savings". Or if I said: "I have such a great career, and I'm having so much fun showing attorneys and other professionals how to create tax free income at retirement". These will normally generate a question and allow us to have a bit of a longer conversation. And that's what you want. Create curiosity and have them ask you another question. I would suggest you take some time this weekend and work on your answers. Have at least two or three. Memorize them. Write them on an index card and practice them while you're at a stop light. Record them in your phone and listen until you get them right. You'll see the difference you're going to make when you do. P.S. Show enthusiasm. Say who you work with. Why is the CPA market buzzing with excitement from PE firms? Because almost every CPA firm is stuck in the same cycle. They rely on word-of-mouth introductions and referrals to get new clients. Sure, these leads convert easily, but it's not a scalable or repeatable way to grow. If you've solved your capacity issues (check my previous posts), then the next step is clear. You need a system to sell that capacity. Here's a quick reality check: How would you find your next 100 clients in the next 8 weeks? If you don't have an answer, you're just like your competitors. And you're missing out on millions in revenue, firm valuation, and wealth for you, your partners, and your families. Next week, I'll share specific methods to tackle this.
