A ranula is a cyst that forms beneath the tongue due to blockage or damage to the sublingual gland, a major salivary gland. It presents as a painless, translucent swelling, often resembling a frog's underbelly, hence its name. While small ranulas may be asymptomatic and require no treatment, larger ones can cause discomfort, speech difficulties, or swallowing problems. Treatment options depend on the size and symptoms of the cyst. Surgical excision, which involves draining and removing the affected gland tissue, is often necessary for larger or symptomatic ranulas to prevent recurrence.
