#PacificAgriculture🌱| Kiribati is a step closer to expanding its pool of certified paravets with today’s wrap-up of the #paravet summer school. This milestone marks 14 years since the first group of certified paravets graduated in 2010! 📓 The summer school is the culmination of the extensive paravet training programme aimed at equipping aspiring paravets – also known as #AnimalHealth and production officers- with essential knowledge and skills in animal health care and production. Paravet trainees, including extension officers, biosecurity officers, stockmen, and livestock officers from the #Kiribati Ministry of Environment, Lands and Agriculture Development have been engaged in a week-long practical and theory revision sessions in preparation for final examination. 🐖🐔The practical sessions encompassed thorough fieldwork on safe handling, clinical diagnosis, treatment and sampling of pigs and chickens. Paravets play a crucial role as the eyes and ears of veterinarians in many Pacific countries, providing basic care and production advice to their farming communities where there are few or no veterinarians. ✅ Having qualified paravets in-country ensures that Kiribati has the necessary expertise to protect its animal and livestock industry, safeguarding the entry and spread of serious animal diseases. 🤝 The training is organised by the Pacific Community-SPC through the European Union in the Pacific-funded Safe Agricultural trade Facilitation through Economic integration in the Pacific (SAFE Pacific) project, in partnership with the Australian Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF). ℹ️ SAFE Pacific provides targeted assistance to support small Pacific Island countries in increasing export capacity and improving economic growth. Through this work, the initiative helps protect local industries and the agriculture sector from exotic and invasive threats.

📢 What is EFFAB, The European Forum of Farm Animal Breeders? Let’s learn more about our partner from the Netherlands! 🇳🇱 “EFFAB is the association that represents the animal breeding and reproduction organisations and companies in Europe. Members of EFFAB are involved in the #genetic improvement 🧬 of different farm animal species and represent a wide diversity of farming systems. Together with our members, we promote sustainable, responsible, and balanced animal breeding. EFFAB is a crucial stakeholder in the debate around sustainable livestock and aquaculture. Our #policy positions are primarily science-based 🔬 and reflect the practicability in the field 🚜. EFFAB therefore calls on policy makers to draft legislation based on both those principles. At EFFAB, we support our members by: 🗣 Engaging in dialogue and showing sustainability and transparency of existing and future breeding and reproduction activities to the animal farming community, to politicians, stakeholders and, indirectly, to the general public. 📜 Promoting to the EU, national and other bodies that policy and legislation offer an optimal legal framework for existing and future animal breeding and reproduction operations. 🔬 Stimulating European and (trans)national research for innovation and development in the animal breeding and reproduction sector. 🇪🇺 Facilitating the members to gain the best support from European research and innovation policies. EFFAB will support communication, dissemination and stakeholder engagement activities of the HoliCow project 🤝 at the European level. Our experienced team will help create a project identity, promotional materials, articles, practical abstracts, audiovisual materials 🎞 and raise the profile of the project through participation to various stakeholder events. We will also establish a #European stakeholder advisory group and exchange ideas on future policy implications based on HoliCow applications.” Want to discover our other partners? 💬 "What gives me energy? Brainstorming with other scientists, farmers and societal partners about how things can be improved in animal production. My wish for the future is that we can take away a lot of the worries surrounding livestock farming." "Animal welfare is a topic I especially like to think about. It is an interesting and complex concept. We have to not only understand the needs of animals, but also human emotions and societal views. It’s about looking at all sides of a story, weighing up interests, and then coming to a vision. Participating in the Raad voor Dierenaangelegenheden (RDA), a group of experts that advises the government on animal matter, is exciting. Exploring all kinds of animal issues together, and coming with a joint advise: all of my favourite work aspects combined!" "I myself grew up in agricultural surroundings and have always had an interest in livestock. When I used to pass by Wageningen in my youth, I’d imagine how great it would be to study or work here. So that turned out well!" "Once you've been around for longer, you get a clearer overview. A turning point was when we merged as a group of Wageningen Livestock Research colleagues to work ‘outside the box’ on systems innovations. It opened up my eyes that innovations can be designed by partnering up with well-willing organisations. With a farmers organisation (LTO) and animal protection organisation (Dierenbescherming), we put the needs of animals first and developed ‘Animal centered design’. This was the base for concepts like Comfort Class and Rondeel and helped found the ‘Beter Leven’ approach. "At the moment, my favourite project is Ethics & Society for breeding companies. We explore how relative outsiders, such as NGO’s, look at breeding activities. The ambition is to achieve structured dialogue on how to use breeding to further improve animal production systems." "We can reach real improvements in current systems, but a long-term vision is essential. Our ultimate goal is to develop new husbandry systems in which meeting animals’ needs is an integral part." An animal identification system traces the whereabouts and movement of certain animals. Different methods of animal identification, such as branding, have been used for thousands of years, but typically as a way of proving ownership, rather than as a method of animal identification. Beginning in the 1940s, animal identification focused on the whereabouts and movement of certain animals. At that time, state and federal programs tracing movement of livestock involved in disease outbreaks were instituted for some diseases in cattle, swine & sheep, and some of these programs, such as National Scrapie Eradication Program, are still in place and effective today. Livestock247's Animal Identification and Management systems comprehensive frameworks is designed to uniquely identify and track individual animals for various purposes, including research, management, and commercial applications. The primary goal is to assign a unique identifier to each animal, enabling accurate record-keeping, monitoring, and traceability. As Africa's online livestock platform, whose mission is to mitigate the spread of zoonotic disease, through our animal identification and management systems, sensitization on various topics relevant to animal health maintenance such as vaccination. Here's are three key purpose of animal identification systems: 🐮 Livestock Management: In agriculture, identifying and tracking individual animals is essential for tasks such as breeding programs, health monitoring, and production management. 🐮 Wildlife Conservation: Researchers use identification systems to monitor and study wildlife populations, migration patterns, and behavior. 🐮 Research Studies: Scientists employ identification systems to track and study animal behavior, ecology, and physiology. We are Livestock247, and we are mitigating the spread of zoonotic disease while mainstreaming Africa's livestock business through technology. On the journey to being a leading source of healthy, traceable livestock, Livestock247 aspires to become a trusted partner for farmers, meat processors, and consumers by fostering transparency, responsibility, and innovation in the livestock business as well as helping smallholder farmers in rural areas in Africa. The Vechur cattle, one of the smallest indigenous breeds globally, faced near extinction in the 1980s due to changes in cattle breeding aimed at enhancing milk production. Dr Sosamma, a retired professor from Kerala Veterinary and Animal Science University, embarked on a mission in the 1980s to conserve them. Teaming up with students, they initiated a search spanning various regions, involving local farmers. Despite initial challenges, they secured their first cow from a hesitant farmer named Manoharan. With university funding, they purchased and cared for the cows, gradually expanding their herd to 24 within a year. Despite opposition within the university, their efforts led to the recognition of Vechur cows as an indigenous breed by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR). Presently, their population has stabilised, with over 5,000 Vechur cows in Kerala and beyond. Dr Sosamma has been honoured by organisations such as the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). She remains active and continues to collaborate closely with the Vechur Conservation Trust.
