Over the last couple of weeks, our Thailand Hub has been busy welcoming new groups of Global Citizens! A group of paramedic students from the University of Southern Queensland are using their knowledge and skills to help us work towards SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being. As access to emergency health care is limited in the areas surrounding Mae Sariang, the group are focusing on upskilling local first responders (which are made up of a network of volunteers), as well as developing first aid workshops to build community capacity. Through our partnership with Edith Cowan University we have developed a Sustainable Business Internship. The students participating in this program are responsible for working towards SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth with a cross-cutting theme of SDG 13: Climate Action. Through community workshops and activities, we aim to improve livelihoods and support the development of income generation opportunities. We have also welcomed a group of education students from QUT (Queensland University of Technology) on our Global Citizen Education Challenge. This is a fantastic opportunity for preservice teachers to work towards SDG 4: Quality Education, develop their communication skills and adapt to a diverse learning environment with limited resources. Now that all of these groups have arrived in Thailand and completed their orientations, we can’t wait to see the projects unfold and the students grow in their roles as Global Citizens. The main demand of the European youth is that traineeships should be adequately compensated so I am disappointed with the proposal for a Traineeships Directive presented today by the European Commission. 🟣The Directive is positive for certain aspects like non-discrimination measures, social protection, inclusion and accessibility, stablishing clear tasks and objectives of the traineeships... 🟣 but the issue of remuneration is only recommended, so not legally binding. World Youth Skills Day was observed for the first time in July 2015 after being recognised by the UN in November 2014 to promote the development and empowerment of young people. It emphasises the need to equip young people with the necessary skills and competencies which are important for entrepreneurship, sustainable livelihoods, and employment. This day is observed to focus on vocational training, education and apprenticeships to mitigate the gap between education and employment. It drives attention to foster innovation, productivity and social inclusion to achieve global development goals. World Youth Skills Day also focuses on the growing importance of sustainable skills as it is projected that there will be an estimated 600 million jobs required by 2030 to meet the global youth employment demands. #worldyouthskillsday #TimiaAfrica

Great news for young Europeans 🇪🇺! The European Commission has announced that they will be taking steps to address youth concerns in policy, giving young people a greater say in the decisions that affect them. Here are some of the actions that the EU Commission will be taking: 👨Updating its quality framework for traineeships in 2024 to address issues including fair remuneration and access to social protection. 👩Further implementing the ALMA initiative (aim, learn, master, achieve) to help disadvantaged young people to integrate into the society and labour market through a work-related learning experience abroad. 🎓Continuing work towards a joint European degree in 2024 in line with the European Strategy for Universities. This #Youth Day, we are reminded of the critical role young people continue to play in shaping the future of our nation. It is a day to celebrate their potential, recognise their achievements, and reaffirm our commitment to equipping them for success. Youth Day holds significant importance to our country. It commemorates the courage and resilience of the students of 1976, whose bravery in the face of adversity paved the way for the freedoms we all enjoy today. It is our duty to honour their legacy by continuing to empower the youth of our country. We are proud to have invested R149.2 million in bursaries, training, and internships, demonstrating our dedication to fostering a generation of skilled and empowered individuals. Through the Youth Employment Services (YES) initiative, we are making strides in empowering young people within our communities, helping them to unlock their full potential. Here's how we are powering possibilities for the youth: • Training Programme Success: Our training programmes have graduated 85 skilled professionals who are ready to shape and lead the industry. These individuals represent the future of our sector, and we are proud to support their journeys. • Addressing Skills Gaps: We are supporting 54 bursars in engineering and mining, investing R1.1 million in future talent. By addressing skills gaps, we are ensuring that the youth are well-equipped to drive innovation and growth in these critical sectors. Building a Brighter Future: Through our bridging programmes, we have assisted 22 learners and awarded 12 full-time bursaries. 🛠️🎯Skills development and traineeships at the forefront!  📢 Last week the European Commission published an Action plan to address skills shortages in the labour market, including actions to be taken in connection with education:  ✦ building of #EuropeanEducationArea ✦ support to #Erasmus+ actions such as CoVEs and Alliances for innovation ✦ support for mobilities ✦ support for up-skilling and re-skilling initiatives ✦...and much more 💼✔️ Part of the solution are also better working conditions, including the focus on traineeships. In this context the EC published a 📝 proposal to revise Quality Framework for Traineeships and a 📝 proposal for a directive to improve their working conditions.  Read more in our article 👉

According to the 2023 report by Kenya’s Presidential Working Party on Education Reform (PWPER), one of the ways to effectively implement competency-based curriculum (CBC) entails introduction of a one-year mandatory retooling programme for all graduates of pre-service training to ensure CBC-compliance and a one-year mandatory internship programme upon completion of pre-service training, before being registered into the teaching profession. This is aimed at attracting, developing and retaining effective teachers, who would ultimately grow to become effective #SchoolLeaders. In the same breath, the African Union continues to emphasise the critical need to transform #AfricanEducationSystems while shining a light on the role of teachers and school leaders as key agents of transformation, thus the need to remove barriers affecting their professional development, while supporting and collaborating with them 🧑🏫🤝📈. Investing in teachers’ and school leaders’ continuous professional development to deliver on #EducationReforms is thus essential in creating a new learning environment responsive to the needs of the 21st century learner and overall attainment of #QualityEducationForAll.
