No, padel isn’t elitist it’s just got an image problem (at the moment). But fair play Mike Dale for raising this with The Padel Paper. Ray Algar intimates location strategies that suggest affluence skews decision making, and I did write recently about operators looking for a Waitrose in the town before deciding if it’s right for a padel club. Elitist is perhaps a misleading word as it suggests the powerful dominance or influence of a few over the many, and padel is far from dominating (yet). Whilst several clubs have been opened in areas of affluence, that doesn’t necessarily make them elitist. As Ray points out with gyms, in many industries, when a new product roles out it can initially be very expensive and often in high demand (VHS, Flat Screen TVs, iPods - showing my age on all three). Usually this relates to technologies that devalue as scale and replication impacts the first mover’s advantage. But padel isn’t a product or a technology, it’s a sport. In my view no sport should be elitist, especially one with low barriers to entry like padel. Artificially erecting barriers like price, inhibits growth and stymies development and may prevent scaling. High court prices are a consequence of location selection decisions. Locations are selected on demographics and so the cycle creates a peception of elitism because it’s assumed a catchment can afford to pay what needs to be charged because of where we’ve chosen to locate ourselves, and real estate prices in these locations are high because of demographics and so on….tricky 🤔 So what? and why should we be bothered? Padel is a game for everyone and everyone should have the opportunity to play padel. I believe there’s a way to make this happen irregardless of demographics, affluence, elitism or whatever you wish to call it. It matters because this is a sport with a very high chance of becoming a mass participation activity. We get to talk about padel to a lot of people at the moment: current and wannabe players of all ages and backgrounds, current site partners, potential new sites, planners, people in the padel industry and more. An enjoyable aspect of talking padel in the UK just now is that it has no ‘baggage’. In this country at least it’s pretty much a totally new sport: no stereotypes, social or cultural preconceptions. That’s so refreshing. Given notions of class and demographics, many sports, at least to some extent in most countries, carry with them certain ideas of who plays or follows them. Think of tennis, golf, rugby, cricket…all conjure up who – age, background, socio-economics – plays or follows that sport, is likely to go watch it or be a member of a club. Padel doesn’t have this, and to us that’s something to try to harness and promote. Padel’s accessibility is much celebrated – it’s so easy to learn and start playing. The challenge will be to make sure that stretches as far and wide as it can: to people who have never played racket sports, those who have fallen away from regular exercise, people looking to be active whilst being sociable, kids looking to try a sport that’s different and fun, and so on. Of course at the moment it’s often the case that people arrive to padel via tennis or squash. But after just half an hour of trying padel we’ve seen the surprise and delight of so many people who previously thought they can’t ‘do’ bat and ball. And padel’s fundamental qualities: it’s good exercise, highly social, great fun, are there from the 1st ball. What Are Your Padel Centre Non-Negotiable's ❓ As Padel continues to grow and more centres are emerging, the variation from centre to centre has started to become more apparent. Of course, there are always going to be differences between clubs depending on a number of factors (Location, Size and Objectives). But..what are the non-negotiable's a centre should always account for? 📚 Regular Coaching (for me the most important) - By providing players with feedback, education and motivation, coaches will ensure player's constantly develop their game. This will help a centre to retain players, from beginners through to advanced athletes. 🏆 Events and Tournament's - We all know the social aspect of Padel is a huge catalyst for growth. By hosting tournament's/events a centre will form an engaging community, attract external players and maximise facility utilisation. At Golden Point Padel UK, I have been lucky to witness first-hand how important events are for the growth of Padel here in the UK and the excitement they bring to a community. This is something I believe is significant for the long-term future of Padel. 👥 Social Space - Whether that is in the form of a bar/cafe or simply a seating area, the importance of giving players the chance to socialise pre/post match is significant. Not only will it bring a sense of belonging to players but it will help create a positive atmosphere within a centre and make people want to return for more. 💡 Since creating The Padel Directory, it has been fascinating to see how different centres operate, what does work and what needs to be changed!
