Are you ready? Every day, more and more people start to play Padel in the UK. Every week, I train new people in the sport. Some from racket sports and some with no experience of rackets. One thing is clear, which I think is quite surprising (but good for Padel), is that players from a non racket sport background can quickly pick up the use of the back glass. They have no preconceptions of receiving the ball when a wall is behind them and they adapt. The one area and probably the most important area that they don't get is being ready to receive the ball properly. As a Coach, I focus a lot of attention on the ready position and the initial racket and body movement. We can't turn back time and sequences have to be put in order for maximum efficiency. Ready position should see the racket central with non dominant hand on the throat. Racket tip raised (more at the net). The initial turn should be racket led followed by body then feet. Common errors in ready position I see are: Non dominant hand on racket head (not throat) Hands overlapping on grip Both hands separated in ready position Racket held down to the forehand side Would love to know your ways of helping to correct this apart from telling someone! Here's one: in two pairs, one pair hitting and the other pair observing a player each. They race to see who can get into their correct ready position before the other player. The competition is to be in a ready position before the other player hits the ball. If they are ready they score a point. Score to 10. Try different game situations such as serve and volley or bandeja and maintain net. A progress of Padel Question: There are a lot of smart and informed people in US Padel business now. My question to you is this. What percentage of the Padel courts being built in the US are either for private clubs or private residences? Any new Padel court being built in the US is a positive, but if they are private, it’s not really helping to grow the sport, is it? At least not as much as membership clubs that are also open to the public. This is one of the reasons I love what Taktika Padel is doing in California. Ryan Redondo and Gabriel Perez Krieb are businessmen, but they also have a mission to make Padel accessible to as many people as possible. A lot of clubs in Florida are also accessible. I had little trouble finding opportunities last summer when I was in South Florida for a week. Here in Philly this is not the case. We will soon have more than 20 padel courts, but all but three of them will be at private clubs. Padelphia at AFC Fitness in Bala Cynwd is the only place the public can play. For now at least. Please offer any insights or observations you might have on the subject. #padel #racquetsports Julian Wortelboer Padel Coaches Association Padel Coaches Registry Marcos Del Pilar - 𝗣𝗔𝗗𝗘𝗟 𝗨𝗦𝗔 The Sports Haus AFC Fitness The Padel State Northeast Padel Eric Loftus Andrew Petcash PADEL-LUX The United States Padel Association (USPA)
