Let's face it... so much big, important U.S. #padel news is now breaking so often that it's probably incredibly hard for you to keep up with it all (not to mention, for me to try to write about it all!). So, starting today we're going to try out a new feature I'm tentatively calling "ICYMI Monday" that breaks down the big -- and widely reported -- U.S. #padelnews stories you've might have missed from the previous week into bite-sized portions along with links to from other reputable sources if you'd like to learn more. That way I can focus on somewhat lesser-known -- but equally interesting and important -- stories and updates most others aren't covering. In this week's inaugural installment: 🎾 Details on the enormous Wilson Sporting Goods Co.-sponsored Swing Racquet + Paddle club (Play at Swing) that just broke ground in #Raleigh, NC -- and will include an incredible 15 padel courts along with 28 #tennis courts and 25 #pickleball courts... 🎾 A full schedule for this week's Pro Padel League Event 3 -- which is currently underway in #SanDiego at Taktika Padel (and is actually airing live on Tennis Channel's T2 network in the U.S.)... 🎾 Rosters from the United States Padel Association (USPA) for both the Men's and Women's US National Teams that will be competing in the International Padel Federation World Padel Championship North American Qualifiers in Mexico next month... Why are Padel Events and Tournaments essential ⁉️ As Padel’s growth settles in the future, it is crucial that there will be regular tournaments/events for players of all abilities in order to keep the community engaged 🔑 Why? 🫱🏻🫲🏼 They enable collaboration between brands/people that may not happen otherwise. At Golden Point Padel UK, I have been lucky to work closely with a wide range of brands such as Padel Corner, Pizzarova and Lost and Grounded Brewers Ltd! 👨👩👧👦 Events give players something to work towards/look forward to as they can visit a new centre, meet new players and show off their Padel! Competitive Events will motivate players to constantly improve their game whereas Social Events provide players with a fun (yet structured) way of playing. Pepita Stonor is a prime example of how events have helped build a community at Empower Padel 👏 Challenges? 🤔 🗓️ One thing Ben Harris and I have noticed is the challenge of trying to find events or information on events, so The Padel Directory have built a one of a kind event calendar that will cover all bases from social events through to professional level tournaments such as the Hexagon Cup! For me, I hope that venues (that do not already) begin to recognise the importance of external tournament providers where the maximum effort can be put into running a well structured, successful day for everyone involved! Here's a question for you: what and where is the most 𝘶𝘯𝘪𝘲𝘶𝘦 #padel club in the U.S.? Is it one of the several Padel Haus locations in Brooklyn? Or maybe Sensa Padel's sleek new home in Nashville? Or the soon-to-open Ballers club -- which is located in a former power plant just outside Philly? Or perhaps it's one of the ultra-lux offerings from Reserve or Brisas.us in New York or Florida? Or Whitney Kraft's one-court club at the Brook Bound Inn in Vermont? Or even a club with a stunning views in the SF area like Park Padel or Bay Padel? For my money it might just be the The Heights Racquet & Social Club in Minnesota (which earlier this year was actually featured on an episode of Good Morning America that explored the exploding popularity of padel here in the U.S.). For one thing, as I discussed with their GM and fellow #squash player and enthusiast, Sheldon Vaz, to my knowledge, The Heights is currently the only publicly accessible #racketclub in the entire world that features padel, #pickleball, and BOTH singles and doubles squash courts. A progress of Padel Question: There are a lot of smart and informed people in US Padel business now. My question to you is this. What percentage of the Padel courts being built in the US are either for private clubs or private residences? Any new Padel court being built in the US is a positive, but if they are private, it’s not really helping to grow the sport, is it? At least not as much as membership clubs that are also open to the public. This is one of the reasons I love what Taktika Padel is doing in California. Ryan Redondo and Gabriel Perez Krieb are businessmen, but they also have a mission to make Padel accessible to as many people as possible. A lot of clubs in Florida are also accessible. I had little trouble finding opportunities last summer when I was in South Florida for a week. Here in Philly this is not the case. We will soon have more than 20 padel courts, but all but three of them will be at private clubs. Padelphia at AFC Fitness in Bala Cynwd is the only place the public can play. For now at least.
