How rich is your palette of inventory optimization approaches? The unfortunate truth is that there is no one thing that will deliver inventory optimization on its own. To get close to optimized inventories you need to apply multiple levers simultaneously and on an ongoing basis. An excessive focus on one lever, say forecast accuracy or inventory visibility, can limit your progress. Inventory optimization is dependent on multiple variables and it is a mistake to think that because you have reached your limits in one area that there isn’t more to be done. Better segmenting your inventories, better factoring in variability, applying multiple planning strategies, optimizing service levels, order quantities and lead times, improving S&OP discipline, these are just some of the levers that can deliver meaningful improvements to your inventory performance. You can’t fix everything at once, but building a roadmap to address the various levers in a prioritised and structured fashion is a great practice.
