I just concluded Asia Estate Planning Association's AGM today (7 Mar 24). Together with the following EXCO members (Cheong Tien Fook Sky, Eunice Hooi, Wei Ping Chong 鍾偉平, David Chee, Seow Ling Low, Jia Jia Lem, Kwek Yong, Wong (黄国荣）we got elected by the members to form the 2nd batch of EXCO to lead AEPA from 2024 to 2026. While watching the members putting up their hands with the voting slip giving each of us the approval, I felt a sense of awe, pride, and also humility. The weight of leadership has fallen onto our shoulders, & we will respond & serve to our best on our manifesto of 7 estate planning competencies; 3 target markets; and 1 singular belief on estate planning. Some have asked why we want to do what we do with an association? My respond: "We only have one life to live on earth; make it count!" The rule of law, private property, the freedom of speech to challenge each others ideas, safety to innovate, as is true for the West as a whole, these are the drivers of wealth in Australia. Konstantin Kisin explains how these values have shaped our society and economy. For the Australian economy to do better, we need to incentivise more business innovation and we need to protect our creators and entrepreneurs in the process. Currently, much of Australia's wealth is created by increasing demand via net migration, migration drives up property prices and business innovation/investment is sacrificed as a result. We are not simply not investing enough in business innovation to have a sufficiently diversified economy. Australia's biggest product is Australia, big and beautiful, people want to live here. The other type of property, intellectual property, will yield even greater growth in Australia if we can create the right conditions for investment. As a creator, I value that copyright is automatically assigned to the creator and is protected until it is sold and assigned. Creators cannot survive without it. The expression of ideas, including business model design and prototype design resides with the creator until assignment. Without protecting creators, ensuring they are paid for their work according to agreed upon terms, we cannot be an innovative society, we cannot encourage that first kernel of investment, the fuel of economic growth, the creator's creative energy. Australia's economic growth not only depends on our ideas being exchanged freely, but when an individual's expression of them is protected and valued...the more we do this, the more we will flourish. #businessmodeldesign #australianeconomy #venturebuilding
