Someone on Facebook asked for résumé tips, so you know I had to chime in! Here's what I shared with them (edited for LinkedIn): 𝟏. 𝐇𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐣𝐨𝐛 𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐥𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐰𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐥𝐲 𝐟𝐨𝐫. A résumé that doesn't align with both is much less effective. 𝟐. 𝐎𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮'𝐯𝐞 𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐚 𝐫𝐞́𝐬𝐮𝐦𝐞́ 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐬 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐠𝐨𝐚𝐥𝐬, 𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐢𝐭 𝐨𝐧𝐥𝐲 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐬𝐞 𝐭𝐲𝐩𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐣𝐨𝐛𝐬. Remember, just because the résumé is about you doesn't mean you can use it for any and every job. It should be focused and precise based on your goal. 𝟑. 𝐔𝐬𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐜𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐥𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐨 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐧𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐝𝐨𝐭𝐬 𝐛𝐞𝐭𝐰𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐜𝐚𝐩𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬. I recommend googling companies you're interested in and clicking the 'News' tab to discover what's happening in those companies and industries. This is also a great way to help you decide whether to apply to those companies. (Not all press is good press!) 𝟒. 𝐁𝐞 𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐥𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐝𝐢𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐬. 𝐀 "𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐝" 𝐚𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐣𝐨𝐛 𝐦𝐚𝐲 𝐛𝐞 𝐝𝐢𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐚 "𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐝" 𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐞𝐥𝐬𝐞. When you're looking for jobs and writing your résumé, don't assume you know the meaning of different titles. Read the JD to figure that out, then prepare your résumé accordingly. 𝟓. 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐫𝐞́𝐬𝐮𝐦𝐞́ 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐲 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐰𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮'𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐧𝐲. Résumés are often used to determine your value compared to existing employees, which helps establish a baseline for your compensation. Even if the employer has a performance-based pay system, they can continue to use your résumé to assess your comparative value. So, optimize your earning potential by ensuring your résumé shows all relevant experience. 𝐁𝐨𝐧𝐮𝐬: Use the résumé sections that support your value. For example, leave the education section off if the employer doesn't ask for a degree, and you don't have one. If you have specialized training instead, use a training section. Use what helps your case! In my opinion, all the talk of résumés being "over" is simply a fear response stemming from uncertainty. But I want YOU to approach your résumé with confidence, not fear. That puts you ahead of everyone who doesn't. ✨
