Kaiser Permanente Northern California is at the forefront of improving care for young women living with breast cancer. Breast cancer is the leading cause of death for women ages 20 to 49, but these women are often underrepresented in clinical trials, meaning little is known about their treatment needs and outcomes. A new study from KP’s Brooke Vuong, MD, Ana Jacinto, MD, Sharon B. Chang, MD, FACS, Gillian Kuehner, MD, and Alison Savitz, MD, reviews current treatments and provides actions for clinicians to promote personalized, coordinated care. The study builds on the team’s work to inform and further enhance care across Kaiser Permanente, including understanding the effectiveness of post-mastectomy home recovery programs and breast conservation surgery. Their work is spurring national conversations, and Dr. Vuong was recently appointed to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Advisory Committee on Breast Cancer in Young Women. TPMG celebrates Dr. Vuong and the entire KP Northern California team for this important work that will improve health and lives for decades to come. While significant strides have been made in the fight against breast cancer, many young women with breast cancer symptoms delay care according to new research presented to The American Society of Breast Surgeons. The leading reasons for delaying care include lack of concern, reassurance from another practitioner, difficulty accessing care and competing priorities. At Onsite Women’s Health, we know that convenience drives breast cancer screening compliance, and compliance saves lives. Convenience is critical to ensure that women have time to remain compliant with their breast care. By offering breast health and imaging services within the patient’s primary care or OBGYN practice – and scheduling appointments in coordination with an annual exam – compliance is easier to accomplish. A big thank you to BBC News for shining a light on melanoma, a cancer that is extremely dangerous but can have a 100% survival rate if caught early. As Dr. Sandy Anderson, Associate Specialist at (RCHT) Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust highlights in the BBC footage, early detection truly saves lives. According to Cancer Research UK (CRUK) #melanoma is now the 5th most common cancer in the UK, with approximately 17,500 new cases diagnosed each year—that's 48 people every day. The situation is particularly concerning in the South West, where rates have surged, with cases in Cornwall nearly doubling over the last decade. At Isla, we’re honoured to collaborate with Dr. Sandy Anderson and the rest of the exceptional Dermatology team at Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust (RCHT) to revolutionise patient care. The pop-up community imaging clinics we've been supporting are accelerating skin cancer diagnosis and treatment, cutting down wait times, and making essential services more accessible. It's exciting to work with proactive and forward-thinking Trusts like Royal Cornwall, which are reshaping healthcare delivery. By prioritising early detection, we’re not just improving care—we're saving lives. I absolutely refuse being defined by my breast cancer or letting it take up any more space in my life than it already is. But October is #breastcancerawarenessmonth and I have a potentially life saving message. Having been diagnosed this summer after a routine mammogram, I want all women - and men - to know that not all breast cancer is a lump you may feel through self examination. Keep doing those, they are vital, but please also go to your routine mammogram appointments. For many of us, mammograms are very painful but they save lives and have drastically improved the survival rate. I have a very good prognosis although heading into my second surgery shortly. I am still one of the lucky ones, living in a country that runs mammography programs and my cancer having been detected early. _________________________________________________ Shout out to Region Västmanland and Västerås hospital for swift, excellent care and treatment. Västerås hospital - despite not being a university hospital - is in the frontline of breast cancer detection and care in Sweden. I feel very lucky I was diagnosed and being treated here. I also opted to join a research study which, for me personally, adds purpose to going through this. Note: Each year 9000 women and 60 men get diagnosed with breast cancer in Sweden. Survival rate in Sweden is 90% - much due to mammography programs. #pinkoctober #mammography #breastcancer #awareness

I HOPE YOU HAVE A CRAPPY MONTH! March is Colon Cancer Awareness Month, and I hope you, or someone you care about, has a crappy month! Yes, you read that right. I'm on a mission to spread the word about the importance of screening because colon cancer is the leading cause of death for men and the second leading cause of death for women under 50. But, it's also one of the most preventable cancers. With on-time screening, colorectal cancer is preventable, treatable, and beatable. Yet, only 51% of those aged 50-55 are up to date on their screenings, and many don't talk to their doctor about symptoms they're experiencing that might indicate the need for a screening more quickly. If you're 45 or older, or if you're experiencing any symptoms like changes in bowel habits, blood in your stool, abdominal discomfort, or unexplained weight loss, don't wait! For those of you avoiding a colonoscopy because you think it will be unpleasant or embarrassing, don't delay. Trust me, as a colon cancer survivor, there are no ifs, ands, or BUTTS about it, a colonoscopy is a walk in the park compared to surgery and chemo. So, get your rear in gear, schedule that colonoscopy appointment, and have a crappy month 😊 💩. Let's spread the word and encourage everyone to take charge of their health. Together, we can kick colon cancer in the behind! #ColonCancerAwareness #EarlyDetectionSavesLives

3moDear Dr. Brooke Vuong, Thank you and your team for shedding light on this vital issue. After reviewing your paper, I cannot stop thinking about the young women I know—those who have faced the challenges of breast cancer at a young age and the devastating impact of this aggressive disease. Two women I knew in training have died from this disease (one at the age of 39 and one at 50). There is still much work to be done, and I am proud of your appointment to the CDC’s advisory committee on breast cancer in young women. Thank you for your incredible leadership, dedication and care. I look forward to seeing you soon.
