Fundamental long/short hedge funds reduced their exposure to the S&P (Standard & Poor's) index in September, marking the lowest level of exposure over the past 12 months, as reported by PivotalPath. A data firm that tracks a substantial sum of approximately $3 trillion in global hedge funds. This highlights a shift in strategy among hedge funds, reflecting a more cautious and defensive approach. Hedge fund managers seem to be avoiding large directional bets and adjusting their sensitivity to market swings, possibly due to concerns about the macroeconomic environment and the uneven nature of the current stock market rally. #finance #hedgefunds

Hedge funds nailed it last year, with the biggest profits ever recorded. At the front of the pack in 2023 was Sir Chris Hohn's TCI, with net gains of $12.9 billion, followed by Ken Griffin's Citadel with $8.1 billion and then Ole Andreas' Viking Global Investors, $6 billion. These figures come from LCH Investments' annual hedge fund rankings, which looks at the 20 most profitable hedge funds of all time. Leading this is Citadel, with net gains of $74 billion since inception, followed by Millennium and The D. E. Shaw Group, each with $56.1 billion. #hedgefunds

As the best hedge fund strategy of 2023 becomes a magnet for mainstream investors, the risk models it relies on are getting a lot tougher to crack. The strategy in question is tied to insurance-linked securities, which are dominated by catastrophe bonds. In 2023, no other asset class produced a better-performing bet for hedge funds, with firms including Fermat Capital Management and Tenax Capital booking their biggest-ever returns.
