Not many podcast companies like sharing their numbers - I don't think there's anything wrong with publicising what you do. We, for the first time, have hit the two million monthly downloads mark, largely thanks to the recent General Election. It's been a wild few weeks - since the election was announced: - We were featured in packs by both Apple and Spotify as trusted outlets for election insight for Oh God, What Now? and The Bunker - Grew show subscribers (the magic metric for creating returning fans of your output) by between 5-10% across the shows. - Our downloads in that six-week period were up 21% on the previous six weeks. - Sold just under 100 items of merch including t-shirts, mugs and even drinks coasters via our site podmarket.co.uk - Increased total paying subscribers to 8,000 across all of our shows, a record high. - We're on our way to doubling YouTube subscribers since our live stream on election night We're very much a self-funded indie, so growth is everything - finding new listeners and new supporters is how we survive and thrive so making the most of big events like this is key. In the last two months, we've also moved office and built our new audio visual studio - if anyone needs advice on moving, feel free to drop me a line because I've discovered a thousand things I didn't expect to need (and more seem to crop up every day). Anyway, this is credit to the whole team at Podmasters who've handled all of the above in their stride, making me feel almost redundant which means Andrew Harrison and I are doing something right. Hitting two million is the reward for us all!

Podcasting, once primarily a haven for niche culture and true crime, has come a long way. Today, there are nearly 450k active shows and big names are raking in millions from the likes of Spotify and Amazon. This is because the top 25 podcasts reach roughly half of all listeners in the US. With nearly 100 million Americans age 12 and older listening to a podcast each week – that’s a lot of reach. But with the advertising revenue in the space representing about $2B/year which is under 1% of total domestic ad spend, we’re seeing podcasts move into new areas to pick up the slack like live events, merchandise, and videos of their shows which can then be posted to YouTube and monetized. To contextualize how big video has gotten, Spotify introduced the capability in 2020 and today, a quarter million podcasters upload video to its service.   Matt’s Hot Take™ - Podcasting has been an interesting medium for brands given the high level of consumer engagement, especially on the biggest pods, but the advertising capabilities have historically been playing catch up. While there are much better tools today for brands to tap into, the perhaps more interesting opportunities lie with the broader universe these shows are creating for their fans. From different content formats, to live events, podcasts have grown into complex entities that allow for brands to do more than simply pay for host reads. The Longtail of Podcast Ad Revenues The podcasting industry has seen explosive growth over the past decade, with ad revenues projected to exceed $3.2 billion in the United States by 2024. However, this burgeoning market is revealing a significant trend: the long tail of ad revenues. As more marketing dollars are funneled towards podcasts with the largest audiences, smaller and amateur podcasters are finding it increasingly challenging to secure ad revenue. Here’s our take on this phenomenon, and identifies where the largest ad budgets are being placed, and offers strategies for smaller podcasters to compete effectively. The Concentration of Ad Dollars The podcasting landscape is dominated by a few major players who attract the lion’s share of ad revenue. According to recent data, the top 500 podcasts account for 44% of podcast ad spend but only represent 12% of the total monthly reach. This disparity highlights the concentration of ad dollars among the most popular shows, leaving smaller podcasters to vie for a shrinking pool of advertising revenue. Lately, I've been exploring the Apple News app and absolutely love the experience. With unlimited news access, Apple has excelled, whereas others fell short. I do wish there were more customization options, but overall, it's fantastic. Reflecting on how news consumption has evolved is quite interesting. As a kid, I remember watching the nightly news during dinner and finding the newspaper on the front step every morning. Now, news and information (or misinformation) are everywhere. Our consumption habits differ based on social status, age range, and interests: Kids prefer TikTok, Snapchat, and YouTube. Older generations still favor television or physical newspapers. Professionals like me often turn to LinkedIn, X, podcasts, or Apple News. What is your go-to news source? How do you think news consumption will change in the future? 🚨Q3 Earnings Time: First up… Audioboom! Hello from sunny Stockholm, where I am currently on a quest to find the best meatballs the city has to offer… and chat audio, of course. It feels like we covered Q2 results just a few weeks ago, but it’s that time of the season again! (You can read my coverage of Q2 here: https://lnkd.in/evdQkFwb) Audioboom's Q3 results are in, showing $18.8M in revenue—a 34% year-over-year increase. The company also hit record ad bookings of $84.5M for the year so far, proving that advertisers and audiences alike are doubling down on podcasting. Investors also applauded the news with the stock up over 17%. And with audience and revenue growth during the election season, Audioboom has adjusted its projections upward for the rest of 2024. Not only are brands and listeners flocking to podcasts during election season—so are the Presidential candidates. Here is a very interesting and thought-provocative episode of The Economist’s Drum Tower podcast on the fate of TikTok in the United States. It does a good job of explaining why concerns have arisen, the Chinese equivalent of Tiktok, and the level of state influence in the private sector in China. It’s interesting to think about the legal aspect of these tensions - whether ‘banning’ a product like Tiktok is legal, and what the dispute resolution mechanism would be if TikTok was to be banned in the U.S. and it’s parent company sought to challenge this decision (perhaps from a competition law point of view?). https://lnkd.in/daKr-hW6
