🎙️ Podcasts: The New Mass Medium? 🤔🎧 Over the past few years, podcasts have emerged as a new form of distributing audio content to a broad, international audience. Popular among younger audiences and digital natives, podcasts are especially well-suited for long-form audio content, such as interview formats and talks that delve deeper into certain topics or special interests, than radio formats directed at the general public usually can. 🌍 Global Adoption Rates: Spain, the United States, and Sweden lead the podcast hype train, with adoption rates of 44% and 43%, respectively. Japan and France are at the other end of the scale, with 26% and 28% of Japanese and French respondents having listened to a podcast in the past month. 📈 Rising Trend: Since 2019, podcast adoption has risen across all markets despite a brief slowdown when commuting patterns changed during the pandemic. 🔊 Podcasts by the Numbers: At the end of Q1 2021, Spotify had a whopping 2.6 million podcasts on its platform, with roughly 25% of its 356 million monthly active users engaging with podcast content. In the U.S., podcast consumption has more than tripled over the past decade, with 42% of adults listening to a podcast. 🎧 Whether you’re a podcast enthusiast or a skeptic, there’s no denying that podcasts are reshaping the media landscape! 🌟 Source: Statista Feel free to share this fascinating insight with your followers! 😊🎙️📢👥🎧 #PodcastTrends #MediaRevolution https://lnkd.in/gR7y-9ue

Eight podcasts are included on the chart this month for the first time: - 1 big thing - In the Thick - Jason In The House – The Jason Chaffetz Podcast - Judging Freedom with Judge Andrew Napolitano - Rick Wilson’s The Enemies List - Scamala: Kamala Harris Unmasked - The Dose - The Jordan Harbinger Show Ad Fontes Media has released its most recent Media Bias Chart® for podcasts. The September chart features 50 podcasts, eight of them for the first time. Our analyst team has now listened to more than 2,900 episodes from more than 740 podcasts to help savvy media consumers choose reliable sources of audio news. It’s impossible to include all 740 rated shows in one image, so a sample of 50 podcasts are featured on this month’s static media bias chart (see the list of 50 here). And in order to make the logos as large and readable as possible, we have magnified a portion of the chart and removed portions around the edges that contain no sources. If your favorite podcasts aren’t on the September chart, you can still search for them using the Interactive Media Bias Chart® on our website, as well as our Media Bias Chart® app, available for iPhone and Android. Daily search limits apply. When you add in our web/print and TV/video ratings, our analysts have fully rated over 4,100 sources, with commercial data on over 11,100 sources. Become a subscriber today to have additional access to our data set! Our News Nerd Pro subscription allows you to search all 4,100 sources with no limits! In addition, you’ll have the ability to filter the search results for things like ownership, content keywords, and more. https://lnkd.in/gAzzk5iw

🚀 7 Lessons from Paywalled Podcasts at The Economist 🚀 A year ago, The Economist boldly put most of its podcasts behind a paywall. John Shields, Director of Podcasts at The Economist spoke to The Publisher Podcast, here’s what they’ve learned: 1️⃣ People Will Pay: Good journalism has value, and listeners understand that. Hitting 30,000 subscriptions in six months shows there's appetite for quality audio content. 2️⃣ Listener Numbers Remain Strong: Retaining 80% of listeners post-paywall proves people stick around for high-quality content. 3️⃣ Personalities Matter: In podcasting, hosts build trust. Audiences connect more with voices than brands alone. 4️⃣ Mindset Shift: Paywalling required a shift from chasing downloads to focusing on engaged, paying audiences. 5️⃣ Long-Term Vision: This is a strategic bet on the future of audio, much like past shifts in journalism’s paywalls. 6️⃣ Iteration is Key: This is just the start. Optimizing user journeys and adapting technology will keep the model fresh. 7️⃣ Be Bold: Other publishers shouldn’t hesitate. Boldness has paid off for The Economist and it’s normalizing quickly. Are you considering offering subscriptions through Apple Podcasts for better visibility, even though they take a 30% cut? While it might seem tempting, my advice is to steer clear of this approach. Focus on creating content tailored to your audience. They will discover you, even if it takes a bit more time. Succumbing to such strategies only makes it more challenging for independent podcasts to gain recognition. https://lnkd.in/dMCUncMu

Fascinating statistic: “84 percent of Gen Z monthly podcast listeners listen to or watch podcasts with a video component.” It's important to note that most video podcasts are still primarily audio products, but an entire generation has been conditioned to think of podcasts as something they can actively watch any time on a phone, a computer, or a TV.
According to #EdisonPodcastMetrics 31% of weekly podcast listeners age 13 and up choose YouTube as the service they use most to listen to podcasts, surpassing Spotify (27%) and Apple Podcasts (15%).

At some point we need to realize that podcasts are the boneless wings of formats. A podcast is not inherently a video format, but also shouldn't be strictly audio. It needs to be both, plus social, plus so much more, on multiple platforms. So what's the point of even calling it a podcast anymore? We're very much in the middle of a post-format era, where the platform is way more important than your format, especially when every platform tries to be everything to everyone (I see you YouTube + Spotify). The most important thing to focus on is story and talent. Optimizing for the right platform (or shoe-horning if you don't know what you're doing) should be a close second and is obviously crucial for audience and reach. In a post-format world, future-proofing your concepts will be necessary for long-term success. You will need real IP development, as well as talent maturation and succession should be a consideration from day one. Anything less, and you are selling yourself short from the jump. Instead of "pivoting to video", let's create stories that can live anywhere and everywhere at the same time. So yes......your podcast is great, but is it really a podcast and should you keep calling it that? *As an FYI, I don't consider the boneless wing to be anything but a chicken tender covered in sauce, given a catchy name by the marketing team to sell more chicken tenders. #ContentStrategy #PlatformFirst #Podcast
