I was so pleased earlier this week for Russell-Cooke Solicitors to host the inaugural event of the Charity Governance Network. The network aims to bring together those with a passion and interest in charity governance, to share ideas, challenges and solutions. We were really grateful to the chair of the Charity Governance Code Steering Committee, Radojka Miljevic, for being the perfect speaker at this first gathering, sharing her insights and experience. Many interesting discussions were triggered, including: 🗣️ Whether the current tone of discourse, which finds charities getting caught up in culture wars, is a temporary change, and the impact of the general election. ♻️ Is ESG something charities should be embracing, or an additional pressure? 👥 How do charities prevent a disconnect between the board and staff? 💻 What is the impact of diversifying boards geographically and embracing hybrid / remote meetings on board dynamics? I was also introduced to the three modes of governance model - Fiduciary, Strategic and Generative. A really interesting way to frame thoughts on successful governance. Finally, we were left with the conclusion that good governance is about People, Behaviour and Culture. Not compliance! Perhaps that helps explain why it was such an enjoyable evening. Many organisations are not getting the benefit they expect from their investment in digital technology. Across many sectors, not just NFP, senior leaders are hoping the 'Tech Fairy' will solve their inefficiencies not accepting that technology can only automate what you are already doing and if that's not great then, you are just doing bad things, faster. Charities cannot afford to make mistakes, beneficiaries rely on charities whether it is research to eradicate disease or local organisations providing for local need, cash is strapped and Charities are expert at squeezing a quart out of a pint pot. BUT, their senior leadership has the same issue as all sectors. We need a chair that will help us not just to support and educate digital technology specialists but also support, educate and guide the top of the shop and the layer below (lines of business leaders aka the marzipan layer) to understand that tech enabled change is just change and that if they are not acting as one, or in competition, they will continue to fail to deliver the benefits they expect. Can you help us open the door to the board room, exec or non-exec, and help us champion our grand narratives around digital technology and the challenges we all face? This is a pro bono chair role in an up and coming charity that has a big task in front of it and, although it punches well above its weight, we need to bulk up even more. Please do get in touch if you are interested - you can speak to me, Matt Jago or Dan Hall (all chairs or ex chairs of the charity) or chat to Tree Hall AuDHD our superb CEO. Points to note:- You do not need to be a Digital Technology Leader You do need to be able to influence CxO suite You do have to care about how Digital Technology can change how charities do business and care that they do it right, not just chase the 'tech fairy'.
