Today I have a lot more time to kill as I gradually move up the voting 🗳️ queue. Been here since 07h20. So have had an hour to kill with reflections triggered by news feed on my Google app 😅. I have conflicting feelings about these developments around Shell. Stuck between anxiety around job losses and relief to see a possible move that may hint at a possible direction away from oil. What I also found insightful in this article is the map of current fuel ⛽️ stations. So this is how many electric power stations we would need to have to leave fuel powered vehicles behind and transition to clean energy powered cars 🚗 . (After Eskom goes green of course 😅😅)

📰 After last week's post here on LinkedIn clearly struck a chord, City AM asked me to chip in on the "NO" side in today's debate section of the paper. It's always tricky trying to condense a complex topic down to <250 words, and there is plenty more I could have said! Sadly "the verdict" here falls victim to the same errors in logic as many of Shell's critics - i.e. describing Shell as a polluter just because they are the ones producing the oil and gas that we all use. The reality is we are ALL polluters for living lives that are reliant on oil and gas. Given the alternative (for now) is poverty, I would rather be a "polluter" - but only as long as absolutely necessary! Hopefully soon we can replace fossil fuels with cleaner alternatives. Fortunately for us, companies like Shell are leading the charge - literally! ⚡ 🚗 After all, Shell the oil company is *also* the biggest operator of electric vehicle chargers in the UK, with just under 9,000 public charging points. That's just one example of the important work they do to enable the net zero transition. If B-corp were true to their ambitions to celebrate businesses that are a "force for good" then they should celebrate the work that Shell is doing to make the net zero transition possible. After all - they will hate to admit it, but Shell is doing more to create a cleaner, greener future than almost any other B-corp companies.

Shell has been handed at least 3 administrative fines, R250 000.00 each. This is not the first time something like this happens with their developments/expansions. They are asking for it to be reduced to a smaller amount. BP was also recently fined R52 million for a similar offense. According to the Daily Maverick, this 👇🏿 is one of their 12 Petrol Stations that have been expanded/built without Environmental Impact Assessments in KwaZulu-Natal. Makes you wonder what other consents did they not bother obtaining. I have so many friends who are Environmental Scientists who would have saved these companies these fines. I couldn't help but notice that their carports might also be encroaching with one of the buildings potentially encroaching the building line. Please let them know we're taking on new clients😅. In all seriousness though, what language should we use to communicate how important it is to employ the services of Built Environment Professionals? All of them!!!

Shell has been cleared to begin work on an all-electric vehicle charging outlet on the site of its former Aberdeen headquarters.

DYK: What the outcome was of the court ruling on Shell today? The Court of Appeal in The Hague has now overturned the ruling from 2021, arguing that targeting one company would be ineffective as other suppliers would step in to meet demand for fossil fuels. It also stated that there is currently insufficient agreement in climate science on a specific reduction percentage that an individual company such as Shell should adhere to. However, it said that Shell had an obligation to limit carbon emissions. My guess? That this court ruling emphasizes even more the need for investors to continue engaging with Shell towards becoming a net zero company by 2050. #DYK
