🐟 Did you know fish waste can lead to innovative solutions? 🐟 With the support of amazing fishmongers collaborating on the #Waste2Taste project, we’re transforming what was once waste—fish skin, bones, tails, and heads—into valuable biomolecules like collagen! From species like the small-spotted catshark, tuna, Atlantic pomfret, and monkfish, we’re collecting and analyzing these by-products for their quality and properties. Our goal is to develop eco-friendly, optimized methods for collagen extraction while fostering sustainable practices in the fishing industry. By working together with local fishmongers, we’re showcasing how innovation can make waves in marine sustainability. 🌿 Honored to participate in the recently concluded event "GLF Peatlands 2024: The Climate Solution We Forgot," hosted in Bonn, Germany, and online. This inspiring event mobilized action to protect and restore peatlands globally, bringing together over 1,000 leading experts, practitioners, community members, scientists, policymakers, and enthusiasts. Major Takeaways: #Peatlands: These unique terrestrial wetland ecosystems are characterized by a layer of dead plant material (peat) at their surface. #Carbon Storage: Peatlands cover just 3–4% of the Earth’s land area but store twice as much soil carbon as all global forests combined, making them the most space-efficient terrestrial carbon sink. #Threats: Despite their importance, peatlands are under threat from agriculture, forestry, and peat extraction, which can lead to vast carbon emissions when drained or degraded. 💡 Positive Contributions of #Paludiculture in Peatland Restoration and Conservation: Paludiculture, the cultivation of wetland crops on rewetted peatlands, offers a sustainable alternative to traditional land uses. By maintaining water levels, paludiculture prevents peat degradation, thereby reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Additionally, it provides economic opportunities for local communities through the production of biomass, such as reeds and sphagnum moss, which can be used for various purposes, including bioenergy raw materials for eco-products (straws) and horticulture. ✅ Benefits: Carbon #Sequestration: Rewetted peatlands continue to sequester carbon, helping to mitigate climate change. #Biodiversity: Restoration of peatlands through paludiculture supports a diverse range of plant and animal species. #Sustainable Livelihoods: Local communities benefit economically from sustainable land-use practices. Participating in this event was a profound learning experience. Together, we can protect these vital ecosystems and create a more sustainable future. 🌍✨ #Peatlands #ClimateAction #Sustainability #Conservation #Paludiculture #GLFPeatlands2024 #CarbonSequestration #EcosystemRestoration #CommunityEngagement

🌲To tree or not to tree?🌲 It's time to face the yearly question, what is the better option when it comes to choosing a tree: real, long-lasting artificial, or alternative? To help resolve this annual dilemma, we dig into some of the pro's and con's in our latest blog. Here are a few insights from the blog: → Real: How many of us think about disposal of real trees? Did you know that a tree in landfill emits 16kgCO2 whereas composting reduces it to 3.5kg. → Artificial: The manufacturing process can result in emissions (e.g. a PVC tree results in 48kg CO2) but can they be eco-friendly if reused (I've had mine for 20 years). → Eco-Alternatives: Use a potted alternative, rent a tree (cyclical economy), craft a tree from recycled materials. If you have an eco-alternative, why not let us know or post your suggestion below. It's not always simple to change our habits but we need to try! Season's Greetings to everyone! 🔗 Read the full blog: https://lnkd.in/ePdBNt6j #Sustainability #EcoFriendlyHolidays #ClimateAction #Gentian #Christmas
