Did you know? 💡 Classical legal theories have traditionally excluded emotions, viewing them as subjective and unreliable, in contrast to the perceived objectivity of reason. Our postgraduate researcher, Jiaqi Zhang, challenges this dichotomy through his research, arguing that both emotion and reason are integral to the practice of knowing and understanding truth in legal contexts. Recently, Jiaqi many other staff members presented their work at the annual Socio-Legal Scholars Association (SLSA) conference at the University of Portsmouth. SOCIAL JUSTICE matters in the lives of all of us. How can we ensure that social justice is fostered throughout society? Two important parties responsible for doing so are business and the law. Business has moved from being focused only on shareholders to taking care of the interests of multiple stakeholders, whereas the law is expected to correct, judge, and decide in legitimate and appropriate ways. These responsibilities are from a normative perspective the right thing to do, but why is it that in reality many people feel that fairness principles are often violated and that a general sense emerges that social justice is not upheld as much as it should. To answer these questions, a behavioral approach is needed as fairness is after all in the eye of the beholder and what we find legitimate in terms of actions and decisions is determined by more than only the outcomes one receives. The perceived process matters and the ability to build trustworthy relationships. In this event D'Amore-McKim School of Business and the School of Law at Northeastern University collaborate to discuss the usefulness of a behavioral paradigm in answering these questions.
