New golf union leadership aims to boost women’s golf in Namibia, engage youth: The recently elected Namibia Amateur Ladies Golf Union (NALGU) leadership has pledged to get more women, especially the youth, to take up the sport. This follows Saturday’s annual general meeting (AGM) at Swakopmund, where a new executive committee was elected to serve for the next two years. Suené Venter, the new president, highlighted the importance of focusing on their development while actively promoting women’s golf across Namibia. She will be aided in realising this ambition by vice president Evelyn Paulino, secretary Tashia Kalondo, treasurer Natasja Louw and additional member for junior golf Sesilia Nkoshi. Club representatives Zanelle Vorster of Rossmund, Walvis Bay’s Estelle Bothma, Wilna Bredenhann of Henties Bay, Windhoek’s Celonika Robinson and Dina Holtzhausen of Omeya are also on board with the new outlook. The meeting highlighted the need to encourage younger women to take up golf, as the average age of attendees was 40. To that end, the committee aims to introduce initiatives to attract and retain younger players to ensure the growth and sustainability of women’s golf in Namibia. The elective AGM took place on the sidelines of the Hollard Ladies Coastal Open at the Rossmund Golf Club where Wilna Bredenhann was the overall gross winner and champion with a remarkable score of 168. Wilmarie Woest took the runner-up spot with a score of 185. The prestigious tournament saw 27 women compete in what was “the largest and most well-attended women’s golf event in the country”. The tournament featured three divisions. The A and B Divisions played in a medal format, catering to lower-handicap golfers, while the C Division utilised a Stableford format, open to players with higher handicaps as well as those choosing to compete in a less formal structure. Rina Knight was the overall nett winner with a score of 159 and Tiekie de Wet (161) the runner-up. The A Division gross winner was Doulaine Holtzhausen (188), whileLeani Engelbrecht (171) finished as the nett winner. In the B Division, Evelyn Paulino (198) was the gross winner, with the runner-up Brenda Lens (203)and nett winner Marien Ludwig (169). Katherin Gallas won the C Division (Stableford), with Gabi Adam in second place and Tashia Kalondo third. “The Hollard Ladies Coastal Open exemplifies the talent, passion and dedication of women golfers across Namibia. Events like this play a crucial role in fostering the sport’s growth and creating lasting memories for players and supporters alike,” the NALGU saids in a statement. “Hollard Namibia has proudly been sponsoring this tournament the past 19 years and has committed to making the 20th anniversary event in 2026 even bigger and better. New Post: Building Culture of Respect for Rules of Golf - https://lnkd.in/gPximQd8 Golf Industry FederationHanoi, Vietnam: The rapid growth in the number of certified golf referees and individuals with rules certifications is a key factor in the strong development of Vietnamese golf. A selection of Vietnam's qualified rules officials. Hanoi, Vietnam: The rise of Vietnam as a golfing force has been well documented in recent years. The triumph of Nguyen Anh Minh, Le Khanh Hung and Ho Anh Huy in October’s Asia-Pacific Men’s Amateur Team Championship for the Nomura Cup was just the latest example of the country’s golfing progress. Another important – but less well-known – milestone for Vietnamese golf occurred in 2016 when, for the first time, two individuals – Vũ Nguyễn and Đinh Hồng Minh – achieved the Level 3 Rules certification. In 2017, two more individuals – Vũ Quân and Dương Quang Huy – followed suit. By 2019, Bạch Cường Khang and Phan Ngọc Tâm joined the list of individuals with Level 3 certification, while approximately 30 individuals had achieved Level 2 certification. That same year, the Vietnam Rules Committee was established with Vũ Nguyễn serving as its first Chairman. Prior to that, referees and golf enthusiasts had been active at the Vietnam Golf Referee Club, one of the pioneering institutions that fostered a passion for golf rules. In 2020, Bạch Cường Khang officially took over as Chairman of the Committee, even though this period coincided with the Covid-19 pandemic. However, this was also a crucial time for enhancing knowledge of golf rules and refereeing, with many online courses being launched. As of October, 2024, Vietnam boasted 30 individuals holding Level 3 certification and more than 300 individuals with Level 2 certification. The Vietnam Rules Committee currently has 40 permanent referees, 20 of whom are qualified to officiate at international tournaments. Many Vietnamese referees have participated in the management of international golf events such as the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games, Asian Games, Asia-Pacific Golf Confederation (APGC) tournaments, Asian Development Tour and Asian Tour. Notably, Vũ Nguyên has officiated at The Open Championship, the prestigious Major tournament. A former representative in Vietnam’s national amateur team, Vu is now Secretary-General at the Vietnam Golf Association (VGA) as well as representing the APGC on The R&A’s Rules of Golf committee. The Vietnam Rules Committee has implemented many activities to keep up with global changes in golf rules, such as translating the latest golf rules publications into Vietnamese, participating in international rules forums and communities, and regularly interacting with The R&A’s Rules of Golf committee. Thought provoking piece on how memberships are structured at Golf Clubs. The traditional model just is not working the way it was intended anymore - but what are the best options? Increase the fees of 5-Day members? Weekend only memberships? Both of these don't really solve the main issue facing golf clubs - attracting and keeping a younger demographic of member than is traditional. I would agree with the statement below - in 15 years the majority of golf memberships will be Flexible and points based - but why wait till then?
A very interesting article on Today's Golfer about the structure of memberships in golf clubs. “I bet you anything you like that in 15 years 70 percent of golf club membership will be points-based." #playmoregolf #flexiblemembership
