Monday morning rant: I have a former student, a journeyman CNC machinist, who is looking for a new role. He has 10+ years of experience. He can do set-ups, run multiple controls, on a variety of machine types (including 5-axis), and has substantial CAD/CAM experience. Additionally, he has maintained nearly perfect attendance. I try to be very optimistic about this industry that I love, but his experience has not been good - we have to get better! Five out of the six shops that he has applied to have committed at least TWO of the following errors: • Failed to respond to him when he called their main office, and they said they’d call him back • Failed to respond to an email through their own website’s “Careers” page • Forgot that he was coming for an interview • Did not know who within their company had scheduled the interview with him • Did not look at his resume before the interview • Had the wrong person interviewing him • Didn’t know if their company was hiring or not when he showed up for the interview • Promised to “make an offer by the end of the week” and then nothing came • Took him on a shop tour and called it an interview • Had no formal interview process or questions • Severely low-balled him on a job offer relative to his experience • Would not recognize his apprenticeship • Could not explain their benefits package • Could not describe how he could gain new skills and build a career at their company The sixth shop, according to him was “very professional, very organized, treated me with a lot of respect”. They had a plan for him, were able to explain how he would fit in with their team, and how he would personally grow if he came to work with them. Guess which one he is going to go to work for? If your shop is more like the five described above – please, please, PLEASE fix your hiring process. It makes it very difficult to recommend manufacturing to people when we can’t trust that they will be treated appropriately and professionally. If your shop is more like the sixth shop, THANK YOU and keep up the great work! Can anyone please reassure me that this percentage of negative hiring experiences (83%) is just an anomaly, and we aren’t actually this bad at it? Rant complete.

I help equipment manufacturers reduce costs and improve time-to-market through efficient wire harness and electrical systems design.
Hidden potential in your next wire harness design? ▶️ Meet with the people that use it ◀️ Here’s what I mean - Interview your customers (the people who actually use the thing you are designing) From my experience, this has made the largest improvement in the quality of my work. The key is understanding where the most critical improvements can be made and focusing on that. When you interview your downstream customers, several things happen: 1️⃣ They feel you are on their side - trying to improve things for them. How could someone not like that? 2️⃣ You will get to understand your product better. During this interview, you should see how the harness is assembled into the product, experience the difficulties firsthand, and talk to the customer about improvements they would suggest. 3️⃣ When discussing the improvements to be made, you can quickly weed out bad ideas between the designer and the assembler, which leads to better designs. During my time at John Deere, I always looked forward to going to the production lines to learn and help. You get to meet many interesting people, help, and learn. It's also a good excuse to leave your desk for a while. 😉

Have you heard of Schrodinger's Cat? For this Technical Tip Tuesday, I want you to look at resumes like the aforementioned experiment. **If it isn't on your resume, to us, you don't have the skillset.** We can't assume you have experience with Pivot Tables if all you list is Microsoft Office Suite. As silly as it sounds to list all of the tools you have used in your role, it's essential. It's not just the Applicant Tracking System (ATS) that you have to worry about-recruiters can't know if you have worked on sheet metal just because you were an Aircraft Mechanic. Maybe you did, maybe you didn't. I know engineering graduates that never got the opportunity to use CAD or AutoCAD. We simply can't assume. If you want the job, you need to disclose the skill and how it was used. Spell. It. Out. Thank you to Patrick McManus and NextOp Veterans for giving Brooksource and Project Patriot, along with the Internal Revenue Service, Peraton, Leaf Home and Fargo Jet Center etc to get down to the nitty gritty of jobseeking with veterans and transitioning service members.
