In 2024, “best practice” content doesn’t cut it anymore. To win, you need an edge—something that’s true to your brand and product. For me? That’s original research. That’s why all the content I create comes from hard data unique to the brand and ICP. Here’s how I typically work with B2B SaaS startups on a strategy engagement: ✅ Data collection Your team (marketing, product, CS, and sales) fill in my Coda database that consolidates information like: → Current ICPs/buyer personas → Past customers → Messaging and customer research → Product information → Competitive intel (existing docs) ✅ Research This is my favorite bit, but also the most time-consuming one. It’s split into four sub-phases: → Internal workshops: I conduct one (or multiple) workshops with different internal teams to understand more about your product, customers, and future direction. → Competitor research: I research your competitors (direct, attention, and alternative solutions) to see how they execute their strategy and reach potential customers (SWOT analysis). → Audience research: I’ll learn more about your audience (buyers + tangential audience) and determine what they want to see from a brand like yours. → Content audits: We’ll see what’s working, what’s not and what’s missing across the funnel. ✅ Activation This is where all the data comes together. Using this data, I build a documented strategy that includes the following: → Content pillars → Marketing channels → Content formats → Differentiation strategy (POV) → High-level list of topics → Editorial roadmap → SME-led production process & cadence → Distribution and repurposing strategy Using this, we’ll build topic clusters that don’t just focus on SEO—but actual topical authority and take it from there. Each topic cluster will start from interviews or surveys we conduct with internal teams and your target audience. This way, you won’t create something that only a few visitors see on search engines—but something that has actual distribution value. A documented strategy based on original research gives you that “edge” and a solid direction to build a content moat in the next 6 to 12 months.
