In a Pharmacy Times interview, Chris Peshek, PharmD, RPh, director of pharmacy operations at Discount Drug Mart, discussed the "Sunsense campaign," highlighting the use of free sunscreen samples to engage patients and raise awareness about sun protection. The campaign aims to improve long-term skin health outcomes by emphasizing sun safety through community events, in-store merchandising, and patient counseling. Despite the campaign's positive goals, pharmacists face several challenges: 1. Time Constraints: Pharmacists often have limited time to engage with each patient due to their workload. 2. Patients' Lack of Appreciation for Long-Term Consequences: Many patients do not fully understand or appreciate the long-term effects of inadequate sun protection. 3. Reimbursement Issues: There are challenges related to getting reimbursed for the time and resources spent on such preventive health initiatives. Peshek continues to advocate for sun protection, believing that these efforts are crucial for enhancing skin health in the community. Listen to the interview here: https://lnkd.in/ghD7gHvt

🔬 **Medication Spotlight: Treating Mouth Ulcers Effectively** 🔬 Mouth ulcers can be a painful and persistent issue for many. As a professional pharmacist, I’d like to shed some light on the optimal treatment for these common ailments: **Triamcinolone Acetonide Oral Paste**. **Dosage Recommendations:** **Children (2 years and older):** 🧒 Apply a small amount (about 0.5 cm) to the affected area up to 2-3 times daily after meals. **Adults:** 🧑 Apply a thin layer (about 1 cm) to the affected area 2-3 times daily after meals and at bedtime. **Importance of Monitoring:** Regular monitoring is crucial to ensure the treatment's effectiveness and to catch any adverse reactions early. Patients should report any worsening of symptoms or unexpected side effects promptly. **Potential Side Effects:** - Local irritation or burning sensation - Dryness or peeling of the treated area - Rarely, systemic effects like adrenal suppression with prolonged use **Drug Interactions:** Triamcinolone Acetonide may interact with other corticosteroids, leading to increased systemic absorption. Patients should inform their healthcare provider of all medications they are taking. **Contraindications:** - Known hypersensitivity to any component of the product - Viral, fungal, or bacterial infections of the mouth or throat Patient Counseling Tips: - **Application:** Ensure hands are clean before applying the paste. Apply a small amount directly to the ulcer and avoid eating or drinking immediately after application to allow the medication to adhere. - **Duration of Use:** Typically, the treatment should not exceed 7-14 days without medical advice. - **Oral Hygiene:** Maintain good oral hygiene but avoid using harsh mouthwashes or abrasive toothbrushes. **Disclaimer:** This post is for informational purposes only and not a substitute for professional medical advice. 🧬 Understanding How Hair Lice Attack Humans: A Pharmacist's Perspective🧬 As healthcare professionals, it’s essential to understand the intricacies of common conditions like pediculosis (lice infestation) to better serve our patients. Hair lice, those tiny parasites, are more than just a nuisance—they are fascinating in how they have adapted to thrive on the human scalp. 🔬 The Science Behind the Infestation: Hair lice (Pediculus humanus capitis) are specifically adapted to live on human hair, feeding on blood from the scalp. These wingless insects attach their eggs (nits) to hair shafts using a sticky, water-resistant substance, making them difficult to remove. Their claws are uniquely designed to grasp human hair, allowing them to move quickly from one strand to another. 💡 How Do They Spread? Lice spread primarily through direct head-to-head contact. However, they can also be transmitted via shared personal items like combs, hats, or even pillowcases. It’s important to educate patients about the importance of personal hygiene and the risks associated with sharing personal items. 🛡️ Treatment & Prevention: While OTC treatments are available, pharmacists should guide patients on the correct use of these products to avoid resistance. Combing with a fine-toothed lice comb is essential to remove nits and prevent reinfestation. Preventative measures include avoiding close head-to-head contact and regularly cleaning personal items. 🔍 Key Takeaways for Healthcare Providers: - Educate patients on the lifecycle of lice to emphasize the importance of thorough treatment. - Highlight the role of hygiene and personal item sharing in the spread of lice. - Stay informed about emerging resistance to traditional lice treatments to offer the best advice. 💬 Let's keep the conversation going—how do you approach patient education on lice infestations? Share your insights below! Disclaimer:This post is for informational purposes only and should not replace professional medical advice. Consult a healthcare provider for personalized recommendations. #Healthcare #Pharmacy #PatientCare #PublicHealth #PharmacistPerspective #Pediculosis

Another reason why needles are changed when administering certain kinds of medications. “A needle must be changed before injecting the medication from a IV, and the medication must be removed from the IV. The act of drawing up medications (such as Phenergan) can cause tissue damage, so drops of the drug may be left on the outside or the bevel of the needle used. If you inject it, these drops may pass through the subQ tissue and irritate and burn the skin. MedIM in first place may be necessary because the needle becomes dull after puncturing the vial, the medicine on the needle becomes irritating to subq tissues (and this is one reason why you give medIM first). I used to find more 1-inch syringes in our med cart and 11/2-inch needles for injection in our med cart. “ https://lnkd.in/e-Md2qnt

[Medical Disposables (General Products) Market in Japan: Key Research Findings 2024] Yano Research Institute (the President, Takashi Mizukoshi) has surveyed the domestic medical disposables (general products) market and has found out the transition of market size, market trends by segment, trend of market players, and future perspectives. Market Overview: Medical disposable products refer to single-use devises (SUDs) used at hospitals, clinics, inspection centers, and for home care, and are the products related to drug infusion, transfusion lines, and surgical operations. Many products mainly produced overseas were short in supply for FY2022 due to delay in production and transport, and some products were not fully recovered from reduced cases due to the pandemic. On the other hand, as medical institutions deployed the system of diagnostic procedures combination (DPC) and the system of supply, processing, and distribution (SPD), medical disposable inventory was appropriately managed, which led medical disposables to penetrate there. The medical disposables (general products) market size (based on distributors of domestic manufacturers and imported products and excludes diapers for adults) for FY2022 increased by 1.2% to 250,342.8 million yen, with 25 of 52 items exceeded the previous-year performances. Resume of various inspections that had been avoided amid the pandemic was also the reason for uptrend. #YanoResearch #marketresearch #medicaldisposable #medical #syringe #ECG #infenctionprevention #SUD #hospital #clinic #filter #DPC #SPD Press Release: https://lnkd.in/gM36rgVM
