🎉 How do you celebrate success? 🎉 Do you do it regularly, for special occasions... or both? Last week was Ellen Drummond's 7 year anniversary at Charity People. This post is a reflection and celebration of what has been a life-changing relationship with this incredible woman, who I am privileged to work alongside everyday. I’m constantly learning from her and I’ve become a better, less competitive, more collaborative recruiter because of our partnership. We started our CP journey just 3 months apart, so it’s been 7 years of developing Charity People's regional footprint together. Before Ellen and I joined CP, we didn’t have a presence in the North or very much going on outside the big smoke really. We have completely transformed that, especially this year with the support of our newest team members. Recruiting charity talent still gives us the same old buzz, because we’ve got some new tricks up our sleeve. What does that look like 7 years on? 💚 Growth with Priya Vencatasawmy and Gabi Smith jumping aboard, enabling us to support even more candidates and charities. Priya and Gabs have strengthened the way we work and added fresh ideas and perspectives. 💚 Thought long and hard about candidate experience and the impact we have on people’s lives. If your mother-in-law made you a great meal, stuffed meats, grilled meats, and skewers, and after eating, because you liked the food so much, you said to her, “I am very thankful, mother-in-law, and I paid 500 pounds for the food.” Can you imagine the reaction? A charity in America asked for lawyers for a low fee. They did not find anyone, so the solution was to ask for volunteer lawyers, and many came forward. It is as if we, as human beings, have two standards for dealing with each other: a societal standard and a standard Commercial) When your mother-in-law worked for two consecutive days to make you sweet food, she was thinking in terms of the social standard. When the lawyer was offered a wage for the charitable organization, he thought in a commercial manner. When the wage was much less than the market, he refused, but when the matter was offered on a voluntary basis, he thought in a social manner and agreed. Companies always try to move the relationship between them and their employees from a purely commercial relationship to a relationship that has a social dimension. Loyalty increases and employee productivity increases. You find an employee who works after working hours with all love for the place, and another who sacrifices his vacations for the sake of work, without waiting for the price of the extra hours, but waiting for the same attention.  From the company, so imagine with me that after this loyalty from the employee, the company does not ask about him if he gets sick, for example, or threatens him if he does not return to work immediately while he is still sick, and other situations that do not fit with the type of relationship that the company tried to establish from the beginning, so it turns into a purely commercial relationship.  But with great psychological pain for the employee Know the type of relationship you are in and deal with it accordingly. If you decide that it is a social relationship, be careful not to turn it into a commercial relationship. Otherwise, do not pay for lunch at your mother-in-law’s.

When I managed a team, there was one group of people that I tried to hire whenever possible. That was moms. There are a few things that moms tend to be inherently good at. The first is time management. The reality of today is that moms still bear the majority of responsibility for raising children. Even with the most helpful husbands or partners, they still feel the most responsible as well, even if those responsibilities are divided evenly Every person and household needs to eat, do laundry, clean, plan for events, holidays, and birthdays, need to get kids ready and make lunches, bring them places, pick them up, and a million more things. More so than not, these responsibilities fall with moms. To be able to make all that happen, you have to be good at time management. Another is conflict resolution. Anyone with kids knows that there is going to be conflict. Being able to diffuse a situation with a child is a skill, whether they are two or sixteen. This often translates to the workplace. They’re also very good at negotiation. Negotiation often goes hand in hand with conflict resolution. How do you get someone to do what you want when you want them to do it? Back when I was in sales at Cobalt, most President Club sales winners were moms. Every single year, it was moms. The last is helpful. Moms want to help everyone do and be better. They tend to be less about the success of themselves and more so about the team or group. And unfortunately that is also often to their own detriment in the business world. Wanting to help everyone succeed is a wonderful trait for so many reasons. None of this is to say that men aren’t good at these things, either. I like to think that I am and know many who are. But in my own personal experience, I’ve found that moms are the best people to work with and for. Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms. You are very much appreciated.

🔥HOT TAKE🔥 Organizations focus on goals way too much. This sounds counter-intuitive coming from a guy with a bio that says, “I help organizations turn goals into accomplishments”, but hang with me for a second. The best way to turn goals into accomplishments is to stop focusing on goals and start focusing on process. 💪 Let me give you an example of how this works: In 2023, I decided that I needed to get in shape.  One way to turn this vision into reality would have been to create a list of outcome-based goals: “I need to lose 10 pounds and run a marathon by next summer.” The challenge with outcome-based goals is that it’s harder to stay motivated after we hit our target. Everyone who has lost weight only to put it back on a year later knows the struggle. Or worse, what happens if we don't achieve our goals? Is it really a failure if I only lost 5 pounds or only ran a 10k? My breakthrough happened when I stopped targeting goals and focused on building a consistent process. The process of becoming a healthy person is pretty simple: 🚶♂️Take daily walks  🏋♂️ Lift weights 🥗 Make healthy eating choices (most of the time) It’s impossible to do those things every day and not get healthier. So I developed a process to help me do those three things daily. A year later, I’m in the best shape of my life and down 10+ pounds. Even better, sustaining this success has been relatively easy because the satisfaction comes from completing my daily process, not hitting arbitrary goals. 🎉 Finish my morning walk? Success.  🏆 Complete a workout at the gym? Crushing it.  😎 Drink my morning smoothie? Rockstar. The reward comes from doing the work. Any positive outcomes that follow are gravy. Here’s how this works for your organization: Want to see your sales grow? Instead of setting a 10% growth goal for the year ahead, identify the key actions that drive sales in your business. Then create a process that helps you do those actions consistently and sales growth will follow. Need to recruit more volunteers for your non-profit? Instead of setting a goal of adding 20 new volunteers, determine which key actions are proven to increase volunteer engagement. Then develop a process that compels you to take those actions repeatedly and you’ll soon get your 20 volunteers (and more!) But the key is to focus on the process. 👉 Identify which actions lead to the success you want to achieve.  ✅ Develop a process to complete those actions consistently.  🏅 Keep people accountable for executing the process.  🔎 Review the results and keep refining the process.  📈 Watch your goals turn into achievements Curious about how to identify the actions that are most likely to lead to success for your organization?
