So, this is my Day 2/30 of being consistent on Social Media... Most of you may have heard about this brand already, but if you haven't you don't wanna miss this out... 👀 Have you heard about the story behind Kalyan Jewellers? So, in the year 1993, Mr.Kalyanaraman ventured out by investing ₹25 lakhs from his savings and taking a bank loan of ₹50 lakhs to start a jewelry business. He started a small showroom in Thrissur, a place which only had traditional jewelry shops run by families for generations. He had good knowledge of this market as he had previously worked adjacent to jewelry shops. Unlike other sellers at that time, Kalyanaraman had one goal - TO ENSURE TRANSPARENCY. For this, he displayed the entire jewelry stock he had. He built a spacious 4,000 sq.ft showroom in Thrissur for this purpose. This became a huge hit. People started coming to Thrissur from places like Palakkad and Malappuram for gold. After 7 years, he opened another showroom in Palakkad. What started with an aim of just 2 showrooms, today Mr. Kalyanaraman provides employment to over 1,000 people across multiple states. 👍 So that's how the story of today's Kalyan Jewellers unfolded. Thief in the family: How Karatmeter made Tanishq a profitable company Tanishque launched its brand in 1994 and by 1998 it had around 14 outlets in 12 different cities. Its profits were draining, and it came to a point where the profits were almost equal to the value of the business. The problem was that Small jewelers had taken over the jewelry market and because people trusted them so much they tricked the customers by selling low-quality gold for higher prices. In short, they sell 13 Karat of gold with a tag of 23 karat. Tanishq observed this malpractice and partnered with Titan which specializes in making watches. At first, Tanishq made 22 karats of gold and then asked Titan to use the power of print media to make the consumers aware of the fraudulent practices of these small jewelers and expose them in public. For the solution to the public, Tanishq offered to test the jewelry of the customers with an instrument called Karatmeter. This instrument uses an x-ray fluorescence machine that uses spectroscopy to measure the caratage, or purity, of gold in a few minutes. The first test was done in the Indore store when a lady who bought 10 bangles of 23 karat of gold was exposed to the reality that the gold was just 13 karat.
