With recent developments indicating plans for a live power auction by December this year, the EAPP aims to facilitate cross-border electricity trading among its member states. This initiative not only enhances energy security but also fosters economic development through efficient energy use and integration. One of the standout beneficiaries of this ambitious undertaking could be the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). As a member of the EAPP, DRC stands to gain significant advantages from participating in the regional power market. The opportunity to engage in power trading with neighboring countries like Tanzania opens up avenues for DRC to diversify its energy partnerships beyond its current reliance on the Southern African Power Pool (SAPP) and neighboring Zambia. The implementation of a competitive day-ahead power market within the EAPP framework promises to bring about increased competition among power traders. This competition can drive down costs and enhance the efficiency of electricity supply, benefiting consumers and industries alike in DRC. Foreign Shifts in Energy Choices Could Change Lives In Nigeria, nearly 50% of the population does not have access to reliable electricity. They instead rely on generators, which adds up to over $14 billion every year. Recent projects by the Nigerian Rural Electrification Agency (REA) have installed solar micro grids and residential solar systems in these communities, offering the residents reliable power. For Nigeria's 92 million people without access to reliable electricity, this investment could mean a lot. Access to reliable electricity has been shown to cause a: - Increase school attendance by up to 30% - Better healthcare services by allowing for the operation of equipment - Drive economic growth by 15-20% due to business growth and employment opportunities - Increase agricultural productivity by having access to better equipment, which will also contribute to food security. 🔌 Staying Ahead of Energy Developments in South Africa As industry leaders, it’s crucial to stay informed about the latest advancements in the energy sector. Here are some key updates from a recent EE Business Intelligence article: The IPP Office has announced the bidders for the second round of the Energy Storage IPP Procurement (ESIPPP2), with 615 MW of 4-hour battery storage projects planned across 8 substations. Notably, the bid round was oversubscribed by nearly 4x, signaling strong interest in South Africa’s growing BESS market. 📈 Eskom has successfully maintained 158 days without load shedding thanks to reduced outages and increased fleet maintenance. However, delays in major generation projects (e.g., Kusile and Medupi) could pose a risk to ongoing stability, with possible intermittent load shedding returning if unplanned outages increase. ⚡ The National Energy Crisis Committee (NECOM) is shifting its focus from Eskom's generation recovery to new priorities, including expanding the transmission grid and reforming municipal electricity distribution. These efforts aim to address energy poverty and improve access and affordability across the country. 🔄 A significant milestone was the separation of the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy into two ministries. Nigeria has secured a $500 million loan from the African Development Bank Group (AfDB) to upgrade its electricity infrastructure and increase access to cleaner energy sources. The Federal Government has approved a $750M USD World Bank funding for the construction of 1,200 mini-grids in rural communities across Nigeria. The Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of the Rural Electrification Agency of Nigeria, Abba Abubakar Aliyu, disclosed this Tuesday while addressing newsmen at the Alliance for Rural Electrification Energy Access Forum held in Lagos. According to Aliyu, President Bola Tinubu approved the fund for the Distributed Access through Renewable Energy Scale-up project, which aimed at providing energy access to Nigerians in rural communities. Aliyu noted that about 19 million of the 85 million Nigerians without access to energy would be provided electricity under the scheme. While noting that Nigeria has the highest electricity gap in the world, Aliyu stated that the Federal Government was doing a lot to bridge the gap.
