I'm very pleased to announce the publication of our paper, "Resisting the carbonization of animals as climate solutions", today in Nature Climate Change, along with Ethan Duvall, Elizabeth le Roux, Joe Roman, Yadvinder Malhi, and Andrew Abraham. Yadvinder provides a very nice summary of the article in the linked video. In our paper, we state that: "Large animal conservation and rewilding are increasingly considered to be viable climate mitigation strategies. We argue that overstating animal roles in carbon capture may hinder, rather than facilitate, effective climate mitigation and conservation efforts." Link to paper: https://lnkd.in/g_xAfH4n There are many reasons to protect large animals (we focus on elephants and whales as examples), but carbon sequestration should not be the foremost, due to the uncertain state of scientific knowledge and the moral hazards surrounding assigning carbon or monetary values to wildlife. Now more than ever, individuals are awakening to the importance of the indigenous worldview in an age of climatic degradation. In this archived article from the 2008 'Indigenous Intelligence' issue of Resurgence magazine, Dennis Martinez explores the tragedy of Indigenous dispossession and highlights the importance of protecting Indigenous communities in an age of climate crisis. Suggesting a move away from capitalist modes of production and transaction, Dennis highlights the Indigenous kin-centric worldview, which sees plants and animals as our relatives, as key to overcoming climate breakdown. Exploring Future Winds with Climate Systems Hub! Our Climate Science Initiative team recently organised WA participation in a workshop connecting people who need reliable climate information with national scientists, to learn more about future extreme winds. This collaboration is a part of the National Environmental Science Program's Regional Climate Change Guidance for Local Action project. This initiative is a pivotal step towards improving our understanding of extreme winds, like thunderstorms or tornadoes.
