Today is International Women's Day, and this year, my theme is: “I will not enjoy my freedom until all women enjoy their freedom”. #womanlifefreedom As someone passionate about advocating for gender equality, especially in STEM and male-dominated industries like science and technology, I've recognised my privileges and responsibilities from a young age.   This #iwd, I want to remind my professional network that while we may enjoy our privilege and freedom, it comes with responsibility. It's our duty to acknowledge that there are women who can't access basic needs.   Let's talk beyond gender equality, let’s talk about “Gender Apartheid” that has been happening in other parts of the world and many women are suffering from it! Let’s not forget that there are still girls in Afghanistan being held back from their potential, unable to attend school. And in Iran, women are fighting for their basic rights and freedom, often facing imprisonment for their demands. Despite Iran having one of the highest rates of female graduates in STEM globally, many are still held back from reaching their full potential.   On this International Women's Day, let's commit to using our privilege and freedom to advocate for those who are still fighting for theirs. #internationalwomensday #iwd2024 #iwd24 #genderequality #genderapartheid #womeninstem #womenindata

Do you know that a power relationship over space sharing in playgrounds contributes to women invisibility in public spaces, as more than 70% of the space is taken up by boys! Yesterday, I had the opportunity to be part of something truly eye-opening. The Haos Community Space hosted a Women in Tech event, where Kristina-Jazinka Nikolic presented the UNDP Serbia "Women in IT in Serbia" report. I came away with mixed feelings. On one hand, inspired by the progress we've made; on the other, a stark realization that we have much further to go. The truth is, I wanted to believe we were further along in our journey towards gender equality in tech. The call to action is clear: as professionals and allies, we must double down on our efforts to dismantle the barriers still faced by women in IT. From mentorship programs and equitable hiring practices to cultivating an inclusive workplace culture, every action matters. The event served as a powerful reminder of how community and dialogue are instrumental in fostering change. For day 3 in my International Women's Day series, I am focusing on the third key area: Implementing Gender-Responsive Financing Data from 105 countries shows that only 26% have comprehensive systems to track gender equality allocations in their budget. Without this, they cannot effectively finance the implementation of gender equality laws and policies. 🇨🇴 Colombia is an example of a country using government financing and structure to support equality. They included a stand alone section on women's rights in their National Development Plan 2018-2022 and in January 2023 created a Ministry for Equality and Equity. They also have a gender budget tracer which helps public institutions to track their investment in closing gender gaps. Whilst there is always more that can be done and Colombia still has a long way to go, it demonstrates how governments globally can take steps to increase gender equality in their country. #iwd2024 #internationalwomensday2024 #csw68 #genderequality
