The Board is integral to the nonprofit sector. This is a great concept and insight into Board Governance in the present age.
Board Chairs Academy asks, "How Do You Lead a Cause?" 🏅 Purposeful nonprofit board service begins with a vital distinction: Board members lead a community cause vs. leading an organization. Jeffrey R. Wilcox, CFRE outlines the six principles of governance taught in the Board Chairs Academy Learning Labs offered throughout the year. 3 things I notice as a VP (and 1 thing I need from nonprofits) Time away Sometimes I (half) wonder if it matters what content we offer. I believe one of the biggest features of our programs lies in orchestrating dedicated time away for key decision makers. It's during these days spent around the table with a coach that the magic happens. While educational content is of course valuable (you need a board policy manual, KPI dashboard, and a segmented donor list), it's the invaluable opportunity for leaders to align on their five strategic next steps. That is the “good to great” moment. What I hear leaders need As you can tell from the blog post, we still feel board leadership, fund development, and executive coaching are highly leveraged content areas. But as I listen to executive directors, I hear they need a better/easier way to do assessment, measurement, and evaluation – that doesn’t burn out front line workers. They're sensing a widening technology gap, struggling with HR departments that haven't kept pace with the organization's growth (especially in managing remote work, leadership development, and leading multigenerational teams). They're seeking better storytelling techniques, and many desire coaching on leading when they no longer have to been in the weeds with day-to-day operations. (We are listening and working on curriculum and program ideas that can fill current capacity gaps.) Impact Framework No matter what the program, we consistently teach around three overarching themes: Aptitude (enhanced skills), Acumen (improved decision-making encompassing cultural awareness, strategic acumen, and resilience), and Community (strengthening partnerships and collaborative abilities). I suppose all leaders desire their guests to think or behave differently because of what they offer. What I need EDs have expressed their desire for us to have better coach/consultant referrals. However, I rarely accept names directly from coaches or consultants. Instead, I greatly value referrals from PNW nonprofits who have experienced transformative change through working with a coach. Whether it's strategic planning, board development, succession planning, or leadership coaching, I'm eager to hear about such experiences. I am all ears and keeping a list.
“When nonprofit leaders, board, and staff commit to growing together, organizations and the fabric of our society are strengthened.” This week, we are pleased to dive into the Nonprofit Leadership & Development (NLD) sector, led by Kimberly Thornbury. In addition to financial support, many nonprofits benefit from programs and learning opportunities that equip leaders to drive change in their organizations. NLD offers cohort-style programs to strengthen nonprofit leadership, board governance, and fundraising – three key areas that yield disproportionate impact across the organization. Oluseun Onigbinde taught us on "Understanding the Socio-Economic and Policy Environment of NGO". This is like my favorite class because it addressed my pressing concern about sustaining an NGO. He gave detailed explanation of how to utilize partnerships in achieving organizational goals. Partnerships help to maximize available resources and even give credibility to your work. He also emphasized the importance of understanding funders' needs and aligning them with the scope of our organization. This strategic approach not only enhances our effectiveness but also fosters stronger, more sustainable partnerships. #NGO #Partnerships #SocialImpact #NonprofitManagement #mynplmseries #LearningAndDevelopment
