Rather than decry the fact that independent treatment centres are providing an excellent service for patients that need cataract surgery, the Royal College of Ophthalmologists should instead examine the current model of hospital-based eye services, to see if it still fit for purpose or is rapidly becoming an obsolete dinosaur. After a patient is diagnosed with a cataract by an optometrist, the local integrated care body should issue a cash voucher that allows that patient to go anywhere they want to have their surgery done, including Toric and Premium Multifocal lenses if they choose to “top up” and pay for the surgery themselves. Eye surgery services no longer have to be in hospital, paying for services they don’t need, like a morgue, or inpatient catering. #Newmedica #SpaMedica #Spire #Optegra #cararactsurgery
