📇 Just published! https://lnkd.in/gkBJrAyW So excited to share our qualitative study investigating the acceptability of modified constraint-induced movement therapy among stroke survivors and carers in an early-supported discharge rehab service. A team effort with Barbara Singer, Erin Godecke and our lived experience partners. We interviewed 15 stroke survivors and 10 carers to learn about their experiences of participating (or supporting) a mCIMT program. What did they think? - stroke survivors felt that mCIMT programs provided structure to their day while navigating the changes associated with transitioning home after stroke - they saw benefits for mCIMT in improving upper limb function compared to other interventions - while challenging, mCIMT was achievable and improvements in arm use spurred further motivation - all stroke survivors wanted a longer program (4 weeks instead of 2) - carers saw behaviour change in stroke survivors as they began to use the stroke-affected arm in daily tasks, without prompting - mCIMT programs did not add to carer stress, rather that provided guidance and hope for the future What does this mean? - mCIMT is acceptable in the ESD rehab setting and we should be offering it to all eligible stroke survivors - as therapists, we shouldn’t place limits on patients by assuming therapy is too intense, or that it would add to carer stress - we should give stroke survivors and carers choice to participate, rather than making that decision for them Have a read and let me know what you think!

🚑 Second life-saving stroke service hits the road 🚑 The RMH was proud to launch Victoria's second Mobile Stroke Unit (MSU) on Sunday, together with our partners at Ambulance Victoria and the Minister for Health, the Hon. Mary-Anne Thomas. The MSU service, which has been operating for seven years, provides critical care to patients across Melbourne suspected of having a stroke, at their doorstep. Complete with the latest technology, the second vehicle will include a higher-tech CT scanner, larger space and virtual neurologist (based at the RMH). Currently, the MSU operates within a 20km radius of the RMH. The second service will be based in the southeast near Dandenong, Monash Health as the primary receival site. Alhamdullilah! We published a paper titled “The Patterns and Quality of Acute Trauma Care in A University Hospital - A 5-year Analysis” in a Q2 Journal. Special thanks to the team Dr Ahmed Alshaikhi , Dr Nader AlOsaimi, Dr MAMOUN NABRI, Dr Ayman Nasr, Dr Adel Osman and Dr Humood Alsadery !! The study included 2024 participants, 70% being polytrauma patients, in which we studied the clinical importance of logistical Trauma quality measurements (e.g., time to OR). The study was over a span of 5 years and was divided to early and late (2.5 years’ split), as seceral administrative and societal changes happened. Notably, there was a 3.5-hour reduction in both the time to the operating room and the time to normotension when comparing the early to late phase. The Physical Activity Workgroup from the International Stroke Recovery and Rehabilitation Alliance are conducting an online survey of HEALTH PROFESSIONALS (including physios, OTs, EPs, medical practitioners, nurses, psychologists etc) who work with stroke survivors and provide advice or treatment about participating in PHYSICAL ACTIVITY. The aim of the research is to understand the current educational needs of health professionals, in terms of knowledge, skills and confidence, regarding implementing best evidence and practice guidance on physical activity after stroke. Information from this survey will help inform a new educational resource for healthcare professionals to enable them to promote and deliver physical activity after stroke around the world. A big advancement for the state's eye health is on the horizon in Morgantown. On Friday, WVU Medicine broke ground on a new $233 million Eye Institute. The new WVU Eye Institute is being built at the intersection of Van Voorhis Road and Elmer Prince Drive near the entrance to WVU Medicine J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital and is expected to take 30 months to complete. The new facility will have 102 exam rooms and 44 testing rooms, an increase from the current Eye Institute’s 60 exam rooms and 13 testing rooms.    Read more about the new WVU Eye Institute ➡ https://lnkd.in/eKy_EqUd

In just over 2 weeks Abbott Point of Care are proud to be supporting the British Trauma Society ASM in Bristol. Each year, over 1 million people attend emergency departments in England and Wales with a recent head injury. About 200,000 people are admitted to hospital with a head injury every year. Most people with a head injury recover without specific or specialist intervention. Others have long-term disability or even die from associated traumatic brain or other injuries. An increasing proportion of people presenting with head injury are over 65. Many people are injured through low-level falls, which can be sustained in the context of acute illness. To Beta or not to Beta… Heart rate control in Septic shock has always been an intriguing and contentious topic. We have tried to address some of those questions in an objective format in this meta-analysis with TSA, published in the December issue of IJCCM. In clinical practice, I feel uncomfortable with heart rates exceeding 140-150s in septic shock after other potential contributors have been reasonably taken care of... What’s your take?
