Happy Thursday!! 😀 It's NATIONAL BOY👦 SCOUT DAY!! On February 8th we celebrate National Boy Scout Day to honor those who are trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean and reverent. Founded in 1910, by American W.D. Boyce, the Boy Scouts of America has helped shape many of our nation’s leaders. According to legend, Boyce was lost on a foggy street in London when an unknown Scout helped him by guiding him back to his hotel. When the boy refused a tip, explaining that he was only doing his duty as a Scout, Boyce was inspired to bring the teachings of the British Boy Scout Association back to the U.S. HOW TO OBSERVE NATIONAL BOY SCOUT DAY: 🔹 Do a good turn for someone else! The Boy Scouts are based on the idea of doing good deeds. Celebrate National Boy Scouts Day by helping someone in need, donating to a good cause or simply committing a random act of kindness. 🔹 Learn a new skill! Earn your own Merit Badge by learning a new skill in one of the Merit badge categories. Take a look at the Merit Badge page on the Boy Scouts of America site and choose an interesting badge. (Coin collecting, anyone?!) Then follow the requirements listed. You won't get a badge, but will have fun learning a new skill! 🔹Go camping!🏕 Camping is an important part of being a Boy Scout and a great way to celebrate National Boy Scouts Day. Camping helps develop self-reliance, resourcefulness, and promotes feelings of wellness from being surrounded by nature. Gather the family or a few friends, load up the car and go enjoy a great adventure! But as we like to say, with great pleasure comes great responsibility! Did you know that children between 1 and 4 are at the highest risk of drowning and it's actually the 2nd leading cause of death among this age group? Did you know that 2/3 of fatal drownings occur between May and August for most age groups? **How views on water safety have changed** Over the last few years, I've noticed a steady but welcome change in safety messaging around water from emergency response organisations and related charities. In the past we had a fear-mongering culture: cold water kills, keep out, even the strongest swimmers will drown. The message was never to go into open water, under any circumstances. That still exists, in pockets, but it's changing. What we see more of now is a recognition that trying to keep people out of the water doesn't work. Nor does fear-mongering. Once people realise the dangers are exaggerated and the risks are manageable, they lose confidence in anyone telling them otherwise. Rather than telling people not to enter the water, good safety messaging now shows people how to stay safe if they decide to swim, and how to assess and manage risks for themselves. It points them to additional resources where they can find out more. At Outdoor Swimmer, we're happy to provide advice and safety information where we can. For example, St John Ambulance recently approached us before putting out the press release on festive dips below. This acknowledges that thousands of people will plunge into the sea for festive dips, notes there are risks, and then provides advice on enjoying the occasion while staying safe.
