🎭 The West End is enjoying a theatre revival. Can Broadway keep up? A brilliant deep dive by Daniel Thomas in the Financial Times explores the decisive shift in the balance of power between London and New York as contenders for the title of world capital of theatre. Post-pandemic, London has staged an extraordinary comeback, fuelled by outstanding productions and record-breaking audience numbers. The higher rate of Theatre Tax Relief has also played a crucial role in supporting this resurgence. Nevertheless, challenges persist. Sluggish economic growth and rising labour costs, partly due to increases in employers' national insurance, remain hurdles for the industry to overcome. Yet as I note in the article, “The UK is the best place in the world to make and to see theatre, and a huge part of that and its strength is in the diversity of offering. Not every show is for everyone, but there is a show for everyone.” Read for free via the link below: https://lnkd.in/eJhxSEry

What might the futures of Prairie-Based Theatre look like in 2040? Will we experience immersive, digital productions from the comfort of our homes? Or will theatres evolve into vital community hubs where we gather to grieve, heal, and connect amidst immerse societal challenges? I'm thrilled to contribute to the latest issue of Canadian Theatre Review Volume 201: Future, Uncertainty, and the Theatre Sector. The article Finding Hope Within Disruption: Exploring Prairie-Based Theatre in 2040 reflects on findings from the Future Prairie Theatre project, where strategic foresight methodologies were used to explore a range of plausible futures and identify the changes shaping the sector today. The article highlights key disruptions and trends—from climate collapse and digitization to decolonizing theatre and political polarization—and how they could shape the theatre of tomorrow. Through scenarios and workshops, theatre artists from across the Prairies articulated not only their worries but also their hopes for what the future could hold. We welcome the news that Reigate & Banstead Borough Council has confirmed that it will allocate £10m towards the rebuild of the Harlequin Theatre & Cinema. The Harlequin Theatre & Cinema closed due to ‘crumbling’ concrete RAAC in September 2023 and has remained shut. Theatres Trust has been in regular contact with the council, offering advice including sharing details of other theatres dealing with the same issue. We added The Harlequin Theatre & Cinema to our Theatres at Risk Register 2025, launched on 28 January, due to the uncertainty about its future and to keep the issue on the agenda for decision-makers. This was the focus of a piece on BBC Four’s Today show featuring Theatres Trust’s Director Joshua McTaggart and singer Chesney Hawkes, who had performed in panto at the theatre. The money awarded towards the rebuild of the theatre is positive news, however the project is at very early stages and the timescale for the eventual reopening of the venue still unknown and likely to be several years. We understand that a report setting out process and timescales will be presented to the council in June 2025. The news that the council will also be exploring the option of building a 200-seat venue in the Redhill while the main theatre is being rebuilt is further welcomed news. A report outlining the feasibility of the project will be presented to the council in June. It is critical for the local community that the area is not left without a theatre space while work is being undertaken at the Harlequin. The above are vital steps towards re-establishing arts and cultural provision within Redhill and to seeing a much-loved local community theatre reopened. This is a positive move by the council and Theatres Trust will continue to support the council in progressing these works and to seeing The Harlequin Theatre & Cinema reopened. Daniel Thomas at The Financial Times compares the West End and Broadway, exploring key factors behind its success: 1. An increase in visitors to the West End overall. Heart of London Business Alliance's latest figures between July and September last year, show the West End attracting 22.6m visitors, a 6.7% increase in footfall compared to the previous year. 2. Theatre attendance reached 13.2m, with revenues of £793m, surpassing pre-pandemic levels, according to Society of London Theatre & UK Theatre. 3. The average ticket price in London remains £60, compared to $125 in New York. Tax credits and subsidies playing a key role in maintaining this relative affordability. HOLBA continues to advocate for greater support for the arts, ensuring theatres thrive and visitors keep coming back. #Theatre #London #NewYork #WestEnd #Broadway #ArtsFunding
🎭 Theatre is a vital part of the West End's ecosystem which attracts a global audience. In his article for the Financial Times, Daniel Thomas has shone a spotlight (quite literally) on the growth and popularity of theatre in London - 'a sector that many feared would be irretrievably damaged by Covid-19 and pummelled by the UK's cost of living crisis.' The sector is not without its challenges of course, but it is a great case study of how targeted Government support can help to unlock and turbo charge industry growth. Visitors flocking back to West End theatres are a testament to the talent, creativity and diversity on offer in the capital 'not every show is for everyone, but there is a show for everyone.'

Dear theater fans and lovers: "nachtkritik.de", the German Theater Portal for reviews and discussions about German-language theater, has started a voting process to determine which plays should be included in the Virtual Theatertreffen (Theater Meeting) 25'. 42 plays are up for debate, and everyone can choose up to 10 productions. This is also important for theater researchers, because anyone who researches the German theater system should also know which plays are democratically selected by the audience and theater fans besides the 10 elected theater productions of Theatertreffen, which were chosen by a professional jury of theater journalists. I'm already excited to see who makes it onto the top ten list, and I've made my ten crosses some days ago. Nachtkritik writes: "We asked our correspondents and editors: Which production in the period from January 7, 2024 to December 22, 2024 was the most important for you personally? Which production stood out in the season? (...) We list the 42 nominations here alphabetically and by region and state. If you click on the linked titles, the reasons for the selection open up. Some productions received multiple nominations. And now it's up to you, dear readers: Which nominations do you support? Which productions do you want to support? At the end of this page you can vote for one to a maximum of ten productions until January 15, 2025. (...) You can only vote once from each IP number. Theaters often only have one common IP number. But please try in any case: 1. to refresh the page, 2. to use a different browser. 3. to delete the cookies for the nachtkritik.de website. As soon as you have voted, the message "You have already voted" will appear immediately. The 10-person tableau of the nachtkritik theater meeting 2025 will be published on January 17, 2025." https://lnkd.in/eg6g33Ka
