The ALP Minns State, Govt of NSW, faces a significant challenge with "Blackwattle Bay", aiming not to replicate Darling Harbour's struggles with hospitality businesses remaining viable because of the lack of enough footfall. The goal is to establish a "Destination" that attracts "repeat visits" from Sydney families and tourists globally. On the other hand, 'Melbourne Central ', a project that rose from a derelict precinct, now stands as Australia's most successful CBD retail Destination project. It is a shining example of a thriving asset that has reshaped the City of Melbourne, a rare opportunity in the industry. With an estimated 40 million visitors this year, 'Melbourne Central' has achieved full occupancy, attracted top international retailers, and generated high sales per sqm. This success story is even more remarkable, considering that Melbourne's CBD footfall has decreased by over 500,000 per week. Recognised as a leading Destination in my role as a proven "Placemaker" and project initiator, I saved the historical "Shot Tower" preservation initiative at Melbourne Central has transformed the site into a walkable "City within a City," setting it apart as a unique national and international tourism "destination". Melbourne Central has stood "the test of time", demonstrating exceptional growth in "destination" retail and tourism, setting a new standard in the industry yet to be emulated across Australia's Capital Cities; the catalyst factor of Melbourne Central has been so far over $9bn of new projects. I look forward to attending the Whyalla Economic Summit today with a better solution, with a more aspirational plan built probably in less time but of substance that will last for the next century or more and offer permanent residences that are much sought-after. Paris is getting higher. Paris is considering addressing the housing shortage by building 2800 new homes per year, including 500 through vertical extension. This approach, encouraged by the Local Urban Development Plan and supported by the municipality, is becoming increasingly popular, especially among social landlords. Raising existing buildings significantly reduces construction costs. In exchange for the inconveniences associated with the work, current occupants may benefit from improvements such as bicycle storage, green roofs, and better thermal insulation. These projects are financed through savings realized in construction costs, overseen by the owners. However, only a few buildings can be raised, as they must have strong enough foundations to support the additional weight. Despite the benefits, vertical extension projects also present challenges such as installing elevators and extending stairwells. What are your thoughts on Paris's ascent towards the sky ?

Having visited & spent time in a number of UK cities over the last few years and observed what is possible to be delivered in a relatively short period of time - I am cautiously optimistic about the potential outlined in the article below detailing the Glasgow City Centre Strategy 2024-2030. ❓ Whilst there has been plenty of question marks and, in some key areas, valid criticism of some of the Council's 'Liveable Neighbourhood' plans and how compatible they are with the realities facing everyday people living around and commuting into the city (LEZ, anyone?) - you can't deny the plans detailed are ambitious. 👉 Through six tranches of work, these plans will cover Glasgow in it's entirety. Following the eight-stages of the RIBA process, the plans will both identify existing activity and propose new interventions which align with the four themes of LN: 1️⃣ Local Town Centres 2️⃣ Everyday Journeys 3️⃣ Active Travel 4️⃣ Streets for People 🏞 All projects will embed climate resilience through aspects such as sustainable urban drainage systems (SUDs) and addition of new urban trees. 🚲 Movement around the city and beyond won't be restricted, however the plans focus around it becoming more convenient to meet your everyday needs within a short walk, wheel or cycle. ⏳ Where the jury is still out is if the ambition and grandeur of the plans can be realised and are compatible with the realities of the ever changing world/region over the coming 6 years. Has it been considered, for example, what the knock on effect is for the City Centre as a whole if we deliberately, via legislation, disincentivise traffic & pedestrians away from the City Centre before the amenities and redevelopment is completed? Here is the first of a small series of posts on these great projects. #EdinburghCirculationPlan Our Future Streets (Circulation Plan) is a strategic approach to allocate space on the City’s transport network through a rational and transparent decision-making process. Using the specially developed Streetspace Allocation Framework and Decision Workflow to support the delivery of the City Mobility Plan and its Climate Ready Edinburgh Plan, the project team developed an evidence based and methodologically consistent Future Network for Edinburgh’s streets. Along with the Future Network, Our Future Streets provides a set of investment priorities that will guide the development of transport and placemaking in the coming years. In the City Centre, the Plan takes the Edinburgh City Centre Transformation (2019-2030) further. By proposing ambitious measures to make Edinburgh more people focussed and put placemaking, walking and wheeling at the heart of street design, Our Future Streets paves the way towards a more sustainable and inclusive future for Edinburgh. As demand for industrial space outstrips available supply, with 46% of the 2024 supply already spoken for, investment interest is set to soar in Western Sydney, one of the country’s most robust markets. For the immediate future, the Western Parkland City represents the most competitive location for freight and logistics investment state-wide. **City of London - City Plan update** Public consultation is due to take place on the City of London's City Plan (Reg 19) in March for 6 weeks, once agreed by the Policy & Resources Committee on 22nd Feb and Court of Common Council on 7th March. With several live jobs in the City, here at AY, we have already been through the plan and have been quoting some helpful statistics from it and its evidence base at recent City of London pre-application meetings (noting it is essentially the same as the Oct 2023 version, as there was little need for change arising from the NPPF, Dec 2023). We will be making representations on the plan on behalf of a number of clients when the consultation takes place in March. Please do get in touch if you want to know more. Key themes include: an emphasis on need to deliver 'Best in Class' office (with Grade B office also playing an important role); a new way at looking building height with the use of 'contours' (including some changes to areas inappropriate for tall buildings - the City Cluster & Fleet Valley being areas suitable for tall buildings over 75m AOD, notwithstanding the new Creechurch Conservation Area and continued strong protection of heritage assets); a focus on culture & attracting visitors to the Square Mile (through 'Destination City'); a continued need for housing in and around the existing residential areas but with flexibility for windfall sites; some additional flexibility around retail, with a focus on active frontages; a new emphasis on sustainability, climate change mitigation & biodiversity (including the "retrofit" fast track approach & BNG); plus more on health & wellbeing. https://lnkd.in/ebDCEcJB
