One of my favorite sayings is "Handle hard better". This comes from a speech by Kara Lawson to her Duke's women's basketball team. The point is that as we improve and master skills, things don't get easier but instead we go to the next level and things remain hard and how we differentiate ourselves is that ability to handle it. This week we saw another example of that. It's no secret on here and to those who know me that I love endurance running, journey races, etc. Things that push the human spirit. The Barkleys Marathon where runners attempt to complete 5 laps in 60 hours in the dense, mountainous woods of eastern TN occurred this week. It is a brutal race created by Lazarus Lake. Runners must navigate crazy terrain that changes yearly, in spring weather and find a book in the woods and tear out a page to prove they were on the right path. Until this week, only 17 individuals have completed the race since 1995. Many years no one completes it. Laz is on the record as saying no woman will ever complete it. And that has held true. Until yesterday. Yesterday, 40 yo Jasmin Paris, a mother of 2 and veterinarian completed the race with 99 seconds to spare. She demonstrated handling hard better. She built her skill over a number of years, starting back in 2008 when she really started taking running seriously. She tested herself time and time again through the years through the various ultra running challenges out there like the Dragon Back Race, Buff Epic and UTMB. She learned to handle hard better. It doesn't mean it was pretty or neat or clean nor a linear path. Improvement is often messy. But she did it. How will you handle hard better? #womenshistorymonth #handlehardbetter #handlehard #improvement #glassceilingshattered #glassceiling

This was a fun article to contribute to in U.S. News & World Report with Kristen Hislop and Amanda Capritto, CPT, CSNC, CES: 18 Best Runner Gifts of 2024. Running is a great sport because of its low entry cost...but many of us could argue that we spend a lot of money on all of the things. When it comes to replacing my running shoes every 300-400 miles, I remind myself that it's an expense trade-off for medicine. https://lnkd.in/gxMFSAh4

🚨 Week 15: Docuseries with Courtenay 🚨 This week with my equestrian athlete Courtenay, we focused on two essential areas for riders: hip internal rotation and scapular motion. When riding, your hips are responsible for controlling balance, absorbing shock, and maintaining a strong connection with the horse. Hip internal rotation is vital for smooth transitions and maintaining stability in the saddle. Limited hip mobility can lead to discomfort, imbalance, and even injury. The scapula (shoulder blade) plays a huge role in upper body posture and control. When you’re holding the reins and guiding the horse, having full control of your scapula allows for better arm movement, stability, and endurance during long rides. By improving these two areas, we’re ensuring that Courtenay can ride with more ease, power, and efficiency. 🐎💪 Stay tuned for more progress updates, and if you’re curious how this can apply to your sport, leave a comment below! #EquestrianTraining #MobilityTraining #Kinstretch #HipMobility #ScapularControl #RiderFitness #FunctionalTraining #HorsebackRiding #AthleteTraining #SportsPerformance #HipInternalRotation #ShoulderMobility #SpineHealth #EquestrianFitness #StrengthAndMobility
