Thursday afternoon several members of Whitfield County's senior management team assembled in the Administration Building to attend an ICMA webinar entitled, "High Performance Local Government: Creating a Culture of Higher Organizational Performance". Webinar presenters discussed numerous ideas and methods for improving organizational trust and performance. Afterwards, County staff continued the conversation. But even the best ideas and methods are worthless if an organization lacks a culture rewarding or even striving for excellence. I know because I've worked in organizations that had some good managers but their efforts were for naught due to an overall culture hoping for and even celebrating mediocrity. Any person or organization that accepts mediocrity won't ever see anything better. I've never been the guy who worked his way up in local government but always the outsider "hired gun" brought in to make improvements. The first step is letting senior management, rank and file employees, but most of all - elected governing bodies know improvement doesn't happen by magic. It requires honest and sometimes painful conversations, tough decisions, and constant hard work. Part of that work is keeping everyone on track through regular performance improvement training. Like religious devotion, it instills in us the belief our work is noble because it serves the public. Enjoyed discussing Accountability with @davidmaltman at Future Proof Learning. I learnt how much we struggle with taking and encouraging #Accountability at work. Research by HBR says that 82% of managers have limited or no ability to hold others to account. So it's not surprising that more than two-thirds (69%) of employees don't feel they're living up to their potential at work. Accountability should be a framework for understanding the impact of our actions. But it's often associated with being blamed. Do you think we all try very hard to be accountable for our agreed actions and take our responsibilities seriously? SAD Reality: There is N🚫 Leadership Training in MOST Law Firms! Further to Michael Rynowecer and my NEW White Paper: “The 2024 ‘BURNING ISSUES’ Confronting Firm Leaders” - kudos to Marcie Borgal Shunk and Patrick Fuller on their research: “The Expanding Role of Professional Development in Law Firms.” Now I don’t know how they settled on the words “EXPANDING Role” as I would imagine this was a challenging survey to execute, given their opening paragraphs say it all: “FEW leaders enjoyed the benefits of formal training.” I was then frankly SHOCKED to learn that of those firms that actually provide LEADERSHIP training to lawyers, the vast BULK of that training is provided to . . . Associates! Can someone please explain to me WHAT specific Leadership training content these young professionals need as Associates?🤔 We then learn that absolutely NO leadership training was provided in 2023 to partners (4+ years) and ONLY 5% to those who had ALREADY taken on some Leadership role were accorded ANY training; with the amount of training provided those partners amounting to ONLY about 5.4 hours! This all becomes ESPECIALLY PATHETIC when we are not informed (no fault implied) as to what KIND of content would have been delivered to partners during that SHORT 5.4 hours. We do learn that in the judgment of the firm’s internal professional development leaders in 40 of the world’s LARGEST law firms, when asked: “HOW EFFECTIVE do you believe your current leadership development programs are at creating the most WELL-PREPARED Leaders to guide the firm into the future?” – the MAJORITY responded their leadership programs remain LARGELY INEFFECTIVE⚠️" Much of this corresponded to our 2023 survey results with Firm Leaders wherein we discerned that 67% of them had NO clear job description; 81% telling us that they “perceived the challenges they faced being far MORE COMPLEX;” 13% even freely admitting they were “almost OVERWHELMING at times;” and one in five reporting it to be a “pretty much SINK OR SWIM” exercise when they first took on the job. Not surprisingly and completely consistent with these survey results, our leaders reported being given NEXT TO NO formal preparatory training such that only 11% felt they were “pretty much PREPARED for everything they encountered.” WHAT are we doing to these people??? 👉 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗰𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹?  If we were to look across at the Accounting Profession for comparative statistics, would it SURPRISE you to learn that it is MANDATORY in many larger firms for all professionals to complete at least 40 - 80 HOURS of training yearly? Allan Koltin (Ranked 2nd Most Influential in the Accounting Profession for 2023) just informed me that more dollars are being SPENT than ever before by firms to SHOW their people that they are INVESTING in their growth. As good friend and colleague David Maister used to say “fortunately our law firms ONLY have to compete with . . . other law firms!” BUT that is rapidly changing.
