Saving for the unexpected Life doesn’t always go as planned, and sometimes that can mean sudden changes to income or spending that you weren't expecting. This can have a big impact on longer-term goals, as you may need to dip into savings or borrow more to compensate. If you don’t already have one, start saving an emergency fund as soon as possible to help you prepare for a change in your circumstances, such as injury or illness. Work out how much you would need to cover essential costs for at least a couple of months if you had to. Prioritise this over other savings until you have enough, so it's in place as quickly as possible. Once you have an emergency fund, you can start thinking about longer-term goals knowing that if things change, you have money to fall back on if you need it.
