This behaviour can, for example, be due to a past traumatic experience. This is because dogs, like humans, are naturally wired to be afraid of sudden, loud noises, which keeps them safe. However, some dogs take this fear to the extreme, exhibiting signs of stress such as panting, howling, pacing, whining, hiding, trembling, and even self-injury or escape. To protect your dog from fireworks, there are several steps you can take. First, consult with your veterinarian to rule out any underlying health issues that may be contributing to your dog's fear. If your dog is already anxious, consider using a noise-canceling headset, such as Mutt Muffs, to muffle the sounds. Additionally, you can use a pheromone like Adaptil, which can help reduce stress. Another option is to create a "safe haven" in your home, where your dog can feel safe and secure. This can include closing the blinds or curtains, playing classical music, and using a white noise machine or box fan. You can also use a long-lasting food-dispensing or puzzle toy to release food continuously during the show, which can help your dog make a positive association with the noises. If your dog is particularly anxious, consider using an anxiety wrap, which can help lower heart rate and other clinical signs of fear and anxiety. It's also important to remember that while comforting your dog when they are scared can be helpful, it's important to ensure that the comforting is actually helping to reduce the fear and anxiety, rather than exacerbating it.
