LESSONS FROM AROUND THE WORLD: In Mexico City I learned the power of design ingenuity. In 2009 I was invited to Mexico City to teach a parametric design class at Rojkind Arquitectos. At that time I didn't know what to expect, it was my first time in that beautiful city. I was immediately fascinated by the amazing and deeply rooted culture of design I found there. An impeccable aesthetic sensibility, a very intellectual approach to design and culture and a unique ability to channel all the best local craftmanship into a contemporary language. If a city can be described with one word, Mexico City is the world capital of ingenuity: Mexico City exemplifies how design can be a powerful tool for cultural expression and urban revitalization. This dynamic creativity not only enhances the city's aesthetic appeal but also drives its economic and social progress, making Mexico City a global leader in design and innovation. Have you been? Do you love it as much as I do? “I want to create a space that moves people. It doesn’t matter if it is a house, or a museum, or whatever. So, it is somebody sitting on that lawn, just going around and around and feeling really happy. That is something that I’m striving for.” Tadao Ando -- Tadao Ando’s quote emphasizes his desire to create spaces that evoke strong emotional responses and foster a sense of happiness in individuals. Whether it’s a residential space or a public institution like a museum, his goal is to design environments that resonate deeply with people. By focusing on the experience of the individual—like a person sitting on a lawn and feeling joy—Ando highlights the importance of emotional connections to architecture. His philosophy suggests that effective design goes beyond aesthetics; it must also consider the human experience and the feelings it can inspire. This approach can transform ordinary spaces into places of reflection, happiness, and connection.

Want to be a better designer? Travel. I recently returned from a trip to Prague, and it’s safe to say my design process has changed forever. Prague is a city where history and modernity collide. From Gothic cathedrals to sleek contemporary buildings, every corner has a story to tell. I took an architectural tour that allowed me to see how design adapts over centuries, blending old-world charm with innovative solutions for modern needs. One thing that stood out during this trip was how travel broadens your perspective as a designer. When immersed in a new environment, your approach to problem-solving shifts. You start thinking beyond your usual methods and begin to explore ideas influenced by cultural, historical, and aesthetic diversity. While I missed out on Czech Design Week, I did witness the behind-the-scenes preparations. Just observing the creative energy in the city, from installations to artwork, was incredibly inspiring. It reminded me that great design isn’t just about aesthetics—it’s about responding to the world around us and finding creative solutions to everyday challenges. If you’re a designer, I can’t stress enough the importance of travel. It’s not just about exploring new places—it’s about feeding your creativity, challenging your thinking, and finding new ways to solve problems. Where’s your next trip? #DesignThinking #CreativeSolutions #UXDesign #Architecture

🌆👽 A Glimpse of Earth... or an Alien Invasion? 👽🌆 I recently came across an image of a street in Macau, and the towering Grand Lisboa Casino in the background gave me a jolt of sci-fi vibes! 🚀✨ Imagine walking down a quiet street, and suddenly, this colossal, otherworldly structure looms over you, its futuristic design making it look as though an alien mothership has descended upon Earth. 🛸🌍 🔸 The Grand Lisboa’s golden spires and bold, shimmering facade seem almost like a beacon from another dimension, dwarfing the street below and creating a surreal contrast with the old-world charm of Macau’s narrow streets. 🏙️💫 🔸 It's a mix of past and future, tradition and technology—almost as if an extraterrestrial presence is about to announce itself, taking over the skyline. 👽✨ The towering structure appears to demand attention, much like the dramatic scenes we see in alien invasion movies! 💡 Architectural Impact: This photo is a powerful reminder of how design can evoke emotion, imagination, and even a sense of mystery. The ability of architecture to shape how we feel—whether through awe or intrigue—shows the universal language of structure and space. 🏗️🎨 Isn't it amazing how certain buildings can make you feel like you're in a different world? 🌍🤔 #Macau #Architecture #DesignInspiration #FuturisticDesign #GrandLisboa #AlienVibes

Nature sceneries inside light reflections, refractions and its inspiration. ---------------------------------- My graduation project, "The Beauty of Time Passing" can be seen at Design Academy Eindhoven Graduation Show in DDW. Date: Oct. 21-29, 2023 Place: Heuvel Galerie, 5611 DK Eindhoven ----------------------------------- Traditional Japanese architecture harmonically blends nature with the artificial. Using light, glossy wooden floors, garden ponds and paper screens, the outside enters the home through reflected light. Toshihito Endo sees this use of light reflection as humanity’s oldest attempt at virtual reality. Most modern cityscapes, however, inhibit this particular use of light. A smart digital window that opens to beautiful nature scenery aims to modernize this ancient virtual reality. Through vertically stacked blocks of glass, its light and colours reflect on the surrounding walls. It shows various nature scenes that you can match to the weather. Where technology can sometimes make us lose touch with the outside world, Toshihito sees an opportunity to help us reconnect with nature. Text: Shane Bergvik Photo of Ruriko-in in Japan: @raph_lop

Choosing Between the Old-fashioned or Modern British House. According to Parmenides a Greek philosopher who rejected the reality of time, he argued that what is (the true being) cannot change, move, come into being or cease to be and that temporal distinctions such as past, present and future are illusory. In other words, time does not exist and period can only be defined by the existence signifier. When one minute has passed therefore time is already past and behind. One minute or one century is nothing much different, and one million seconds or a day after today is still in front. We only know time is moving forward. There was a moment when something we call old-fashioned was modern in its period of signifier. Therefore, can you define which old-fashioned or modern British house is now in the picture below? Design: Peter Y.G. Modelling: Not applicable. Render: Bing Image Creator. Prompt/Text Description: Classified. Contour, the collection of inclusive tables I designed in collaboration with Landscape Forms is now available. We focused relentlessly on understanding this problem and the existing regulations, designing for elegance and simplicity, and importantly, ensuring that the experience must be the same for all users. This combination led us to create a product line that I believe is one step above any other tables on the market today. #furniture #design #industrialdesign #furnituredesign #inclusion #innovation #tables #publicspaces #userexperience #urbandesign #landscapearchitecture #urbanplanning #cityplanning #placemaking Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA)
How an accessibility expert approaches inclusive design. A New York City-based industrial designer and accessibility expert, Ignacio Ciocchini knows what it means to create spaces that are inclusive of everyone. In the latest from our Insite blog, we sat down with Ciocchini to discuss his innovative new possibilities for ADA compliance with our Contour tables and uncover how his “no shortcuts allowed” approach is reframing what it means to design for inclusivity. **Aesthetic uniformity limits cultural expression** There's a tendency for design trends to converge towards a homogeneous international style. Architecture and design are forms of non-verbal communication that convey meaning about a region’s history, culture, and values. When these elements become standardised, cultural expression is reduced. For example, museums, which serve as custodians of cultural narratives, risk becoming indistinguishable from one another, offering similar visitor experiences regardless of their geographical or cultural context. These global trends dilute local cultural identities and traditions. Designers can combat this by taking a vernacular approach, by incorporating local materials, techniques, and motifs. By engaging local communities and artisans in the process we can ensure that the resulting architecture and design reflect the local context, establishing a true 'sense of place'. #designthinking Photo @unsplash
