Surrounded by rural landscape and with a floating shipping container as its centrepiece, Barney’s Ruins is a striking and unexpected sight — and even more so at night when its exterior walls light up. Appearance aside, the house is also a showcase for various themes that are close to its architect Patrick Bradley’s heart, including sustainable and affordable building, creating functionality within small spaces and helping to preserve the countryside’s old ruins.

In Conocoto, Quito, Ecuador, a residential dwelling blurs the lines between indoor and outdoor spaces. It blurs them so much so, that the outdoor columns supporting the roof are living lechero trees. The rest of the structural work is made of rammed earth, locally sourced and timber beams and framework from the region as well. The home is surrounded by gardens, which act as outdoor living spaces and even as a bathroom. The shower, is actually located in one of the gardens. All of the biological waste generated on the site is organically filtered, and composted on site as well. Projects such as these, act as reminders that homes do not need to follow the standards of built dwellings that we have become accustomed to in highly developed societies. #sustainablearchitecture #sustainabledesign #sustainablebuilding #sustainableconstruction #garden #gardens #landscapedesign #sustainability #renewable #quitoecuador #quito #ecuador #southamerica

Studies and the tests of time have shown the resiliency of The Dome. So, #EmergencyManagement comrades: BRIC funding applicable? Let me know your thoughts.
Experienced Structural, Civil & Geo Engineering Lead | Senior Project Manager | Innovator in Earthquake-Resistant Design & Construction
A dome-centered residential complex featuring a collection of white, dome-shaped structures nestled within a tropical environment. Each dome has a simplistic and contemporary design with a single door and window visible from this perspective. These structures are arrayed neatly along curving pathways, suggesting a planned community or a special housing development. The landscape is sparsely vegetated, indicating either a new development or an arid climate, and the surrounding hills hint at a secluded location. The domes could represent an innovative approach to housing, possibly emphasizing energy efficiency and disaster resilience.

🏔️ Dreaming of your perfect mountain retreat? At NW Roots Construction, we specialize in bringing your vision to life amidst the serene backdrop of the mountains. Performing due diligence and supporting your project goals are at the center of our design build approach. Based on our experience, and seeing recent changes in building codes, climate conditions becoming more extreme and the improvement of building science in general, before you embark on designing your dream mountain home, consider these essential tips: 1. **Embrace the View**: Design large, strategic windows to capture the breathtaking views. Let nature's beauty be the focal point of your home. Although remember, windows (fenestration) are major culprits when designing an efficient hope as they require additional support from your heating and cooling systems. 2. **Sustainable Materials**: Opt for local, sustainable materials that blend seamlessly with the natural surroundings, ensuring durability against the elements while respecting the environment. Our team is mindful of products during design, our aim is to provide as many details, not too small overwhelm the process, but to ensure our clients are aware and of all the options! 3. **Efficient Insulation**: Mountain climates can be harsh. High-quality insulation and efficient heating solutions are key to keeping your home cozy all year round. 4. **Outdoor Spaces**: Incorporate decks, patios, or balconies to enjoy the fresh mountain air and stunning vistas. It's all about indoor-outdoor living. 5. **Respect the Terrain**: Work with the land, not against it. Designing your home to fit the terrain reduces the need for extensive landscaping and helps preserve the natural beauty of your property. At NW Roots Construction, we understand the unique challenges and opportunities that come with building in mountainous areas. Let us guide you in creating a home that's not just a place to live, but a sanctuary that complements its majestic setting. We are guaranteed to have fun and happy to teach along the way! 🏡💚 #MountainHomeDesign #SustainableLiving #NWRootsConstruction #DreamHome #EcoFriendlyBuilding #buildingscientists #suncadia #designbuild #customhomebuilder #centralwashington #centraloregon
