**Seeking Justice for a 26-Year-Old Investor*
*By Sabiiti Herbert*
Today, I write with a heavy heart and frustration, even as I acknowledge that I might not have all the details about my friend's predicament.
To provide some background, I first met miss Vasundhara Oswal who would eventually become a dear friend. This young woman, now 26 years old, has invested over USD 60 million into an ethanol plant—the largest of its kind in East Africa.
What drew me to her wasn’t just her business acumen but her story. At just 23, she came to Uganda with her parents' support and built this massive project from the ground up. She’s not just an investor; she’s a visionary and a master negotiator.
Given my passion for empowering the youth of Uganda, I saw in her an extraordinary individual and felt compelled to support her settle in Uganda.
But then, out of nowhere, I received a call: my friend had been arrested, accused of kidnapping and attempted murder. It seemed too far-fetched to be true. Today, as I read her father’s open letter to the President of Uganda, expressing his deep frustration, I couldn’t help but empathize. When I spoke with him, his desperation was palpable.
I am not a judge, nor do I claim to be a criminal investigator, but from what I gathered, it seems like this young woman may be entangled in a crime that isn’t hers to bear. If there are business conflicts or accusations of kidnapping, it appears the weight of these issues should rest with her father.
The situation underscores a troubling reality: while Uganda is a country of peace and a fertile ground for investment, sometimes we falter, allowing mistakes that could have been easily avoided. It’s disheartening to see such a promising, ambitious investor face such challenges in a system that has its flaws.
Despite the ordeal, I today visited her at Nakasongola Prison, and I was struck by her resilience. She didn’t ask for much—just 10 books and a Bible, wanting to nourish her mind and spirit. Her resolve remains unbroken, even in such a difficult time.
I will continue to encourage her to soldier on and hope she doesn’t give up on Uganda once this chapter concludes.
I hold hope that the President, whose discernment and wisdom I respect, will see the injustice here and intervene accordingly.
