In 2020, only 42% of public family enterprises had a board policy for sustainability oversight, now standing at 71%. Within the default sample (Top 100 Forbes 2000), the percentage was 63%, reaching 88% by 2023. This is a relative improvement of 40%, compared with 69% in family businesses, suggesting that family businesses can be more nimble to drive sustainable leadership. Regulations, political backlash, disclosure developments: Being a sustainability leader last year sometimes felt like a whole lot of block and tackle instead of gaining real ground on our environmental goals. So, how do we change the play in 2024? Your role as an ESG leader is constantly changing and putting new demands on you at an unprecedented pace. But you don’t have to go it alone. Our 2023 Sustainable Investing Report is already available. In 2017, CDPQ first announced its climate targets. In 2021, we decided to be more ambitious, and we raised them. Our 2023 Sustainable Investing Report published today shows that we are very close to meeting them faster than expected! On the diversity front, 57% of CDPQ’s actively managed public companies count at least 30% women on their Boards, an increase of more than 39% in three years, and 30% of its nominee directors are women.

The pursuit of sustainability is an inspiring quest that unites organisations, communities, and individuals in a collective endeavour towards a thriving future. While challenges such as climate change, social inequalities, and ethical concerns pose existential threats to businesses and society alike, they also present tremendous opportunities for innovation and positive transformation. Recognising this reality, visionary organisations are proudly championing sustainability as a core guiding principle that shapes their operations, strategies, and decision-making processes. In fact, globally, sustainability governance has experienced significant growth, rising from 50% in 2019 to 88% in 2023. However, navigating the nuances of this vital transition requires organisations to approach problems with fresh perspectives, question long-held assumptions, and forge bold new solutions. This is where the board of directors comes in—as catalytic forces driving sustainable progress. Vipul Kumar, Senior Partner, Xynteo writes in Forbes India on the board of directors becoming an indispensable beacon, illuminating a company’s path towards a more sustainable and conscientious corporate ethos. #Sustainability #Leadership #GoodGrowth
