honoring the past is an amazing platform to step into a sustainable future connecting to the values that matter most what makes life worth living today. in reflecting on how the Brooklyn Museum honors the Lenape and how Colgate honored the Oneida nation i contemplate how i am honoring the lands where i’ve lived, the deep history, under my feet as i walk today, the pride and enduring history of prior people, the Caribs and Arawaks of Jamaica. we’re not the first on these lands, we too will be history to some future state, and if we are kind to each other, and the Earth all around, we might leave something meaningful for future peoples. in your work on projects, to get to Q4 goals, as you work with those on your team, your leaders and clients, how are you creating an enduring legacy today? what artifacts will they find on which you left your mark?

At CEHD, faculty sabbaticals are more than academic breaks - they're opportunities to make a lasting impact. Professors Avi Kaplan and Christine Woyshner exemplify this through their recent work. 🔬 Kaplan applied his Dynamic Systems Model of Role Identity in global initiatives to help communities foster agency and identity exploration. A Smithsonian collaboration even redefined how museums engage visitors. 📚 Woyshner’s research on Black civic organizations highlights their vital role in education before Brown v. Love this, and knowing Jeri, I'll bet she learned at least 3-4 things that will improve Cengage's offerings. Here at Pragmatic Institute, when we train product managers for other companies, we focus extensively on what we call NIHITO (Nothing Important Happens In The Office). Its a borderline mandate that product managers get out into the market and listen directly to customers for met and unmet needs. That a Chief People Officer is practicing NIHITO speaks to Cengage's customer focus. Way to go!

Next up is Derek Waterman, our Director of Administration 🏺 Derek graduated High School from Raleigh, MS (Go Pharaohs!) 🛡️ Derek attended the The University of Memphis and graduated with a Bachelors of Science in Computer Engineering Technology. 🐯 Derek then attended Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and completed his Masters in Aeronautical Science. 1️⃣Share something fun or interesting about your field or being the Director of Administration? I get to work with my wife, who is the best at keeping me sane at work. I could not do this without her. 2️⃣Why did you choose to work in Administration? I love numbers ... anything that deals with budgets, profit/loss, revenue, and other financial data and graphs. Plus I feel like I can improve the bottom line by driving decisions with facts. 3️⃣What is one highlight from your job that you want to share? I get to develop code for internal usage as well as our customers, sometimes more so than the administration work I am responsible for. 4️⃣What is one piece of advice you would give to anyone starting back to school this fall? Learn something new every day (even if it is small or unrelated to your studies) and have fun along the way.
