New edition of the US NTE Report on Foreign Trade Barriers shows still significant barriers affecting African trade: The Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR), through the Trade Policy Staff Committee (TPSC), publishes every year a National Trade Estimate Report on Foreign Trade Barriers (NTE Report) to describe the most significant foreign barriers affecting U.S. exports of goods and services in the main markets abroad. Prepared on the basis of the input of US companies engaged in international trade in response to a notice published in the Federal Register, the NTE Report gives an overview of the main trade barriers in key destination markets of US exports, including in some African countries. The 2024 edition of the report describes trade barriers in countries such as Algeria, Angola, Cote d’Ivoire, Egypt, #Ethiopia, Ghana, #Kenya, Morocco, Nigeria, South #Africa and Tunisia. The role of international relations in fostering effective and efficient trade zones cannot be overemphasized. Africa needs integrated policies that ensure trade activities not only remain transparent but also fight ills such as organized crimes, illicit and illegal trade activities which negatively affect local, regional and global economies in the long run. Such activities as illegal trade have affected the capacity of countries to foster economic development for their respective populations hence contributing to severe levels of poverty, increased inequalities. Integrated trade policies within countries and across the regional bloc may be one of the crucial approaches to promote high level trade potential between and among countries. What is the current Trade Outlook in Africa? African countries that have long traded with others outside the continent are now shipping goods to each other. In the spotlight during the two-day high-level meeting starting on February 17 is a treaty that the African Union (AU) says will revolutionize trade on a continent where country-to-country trade levels are dismal, with most imports coming from countries like China.
