The Brooklyn Marine Terminal is slated for major renovations, including upgrades to its port and public waterfront access... and potentially the construction of thousands of apartments on the terminal. In THE CITY (newsroom)'s latest article, the project's task force members expressed their concerns of building houses on the site. "Once it’s gone, it’s gone forever. You’re not going to pull out housing or commercial development to create industrial land" says Waterfront Alliance's own President and CEO Cortney Koenig Worrall. As the deadline for project renovations rapidly approaches, the task force is left with a difficult decision on how to balance the demand for housing and a fully functional, sustainable port. • St William has received full planning permission to redevelop the Stratford Gasworks site in East London. • The 2.2-acre brownfield site will be transformed into a mixed-tenure neighborhood featuring 245 homes, located near West Ham and Stratford Stations. • The development design, created with Cowen + Partners and LDA Design, honors the area's Victorian industrial heritage. • Facades will incorporate handmade bricks and detailing inspired by nearby historic landmarks, including the Grade II* Listed Abbey Mills Pumping Station and Sir Joseph Bazalgette-designed 19th-century houses. • Before construction begins, the project requires Gateway 2 approval from the Building Safety Regulator. • Dean Summers, Managing Director of St William, praised the London Legacy Development Corporation and London Borough of Newham for quickly finalising the section 106 agreement within five weeks of planning committee approval. • This project supports Berkeley Group's strategy to progress more sites into delivery, aligning with the Government’s pro-homebuilding agenda.

On Thursday (today), the Planning Authority (PA) approved plans for a 5-star hotel and 105 residential units to replace parts of Fort Chambray, Gozo. The proposal, which had already been recommended for approval by the Directorate of Planning, was approved with two votes against and five in favour. The approval greenlights the development of 105 residential units, based on land spanning 14,514sqm and a five-storey five-star hotel that accommodates 64 rooms and 50 apartments. The project was put forward by developer Michael Caruana on behalf of Fort Chambray Ltd. Plans indicate that the barracks’ screen and flanks will be relocated to an area closer to the Knights’ barracks while three additional floors will be built over a new building. It will include the re-assembled barrack’s façade. Planning Board Chairman Emmanuel Camilleri remarked that, in 2012, an outline permit was issued allowing the demolition of the barracks and noted that the Superintendence for Cultural Heritage did not object to the project. Nonetheless, one of the Board members who voted against the plans, Romano Cassar, described the demolition of the barracks is “an act of madness.” The Gozo Regional Development Authority representative, who was the second member to vote against the project, commented that plans should have been integrated in the project. #WhosWho #Malta

Brazilian city approves world’s tallest residential tower The city of Balneário Camboriú in southeast Brazil has approved the construction of the 544m-tall Triumph Tower, which, if completed, would be the world’s tallest residential building. It’s set to be located on the Barra Sul waterfront, already home to some of South America’s tallest buildings, including the two 294m Yachthouse towers and the 290m One Tower. #Jerusalem is planning to build a new urban complex over the Begin Highway in one of the city’s most ambitious #construction projects to date. The Jerusalem Local Planning and Building Committee says it has approved plans for the “Begin Rooftop,” a 214-dunam (53-acre) urban park that will include 2,210 housing units, five 45-story towers, and 64 dunams of open public spaces. #Towers to be Introduced to Longo's Site at 7 and Woodbine in #Markham The smaller of the two adjacent proposals is for 3085 Highway 7 in #Markham’s Brown's Corners area, introducing four towers ranging from 30 to 36 storeys. Designed by Arcadis for Longo's, the project would transform a site currently housing a Longo's supermarket. Located on the south side of Highway 7, east of Woodbine Avenue, the land is within the Major Transit Station Areas of the Woodbine and Montgomery stops of York Region Transit's VIVA bus rapid transit line along Highway 7. The proposal abuts a surrounding redevelopment proposal for #Markham Woodside. Gatzios Planning + Development Consultants has submitted Official Plan and Zoning By-law Amendment applications to the City of Markham on behalf of the developer. The proposal entails towers with heights ranging from 103.63m to 120.87m, with a total of 1,711 #residential units. Three would be positioned atop a U-shaped #podium of 1 to 8 storeys, framing the western and northern edges of the site. The tallest #tower would rise from an 8-storey podium along the southern boundary.
