Leadership has been defined in many ways. One particular definition which appeals to me is that there are two parts that define a leader. The first part is unhappiness with status quo or the situation at hand. On this, almost all of us can lay claim to having the first part. However, what distinguishes leaders is the second part, which is when the unhappy individual decides and commits their entire self and energy towards effecting a change for the better. Viewed this way, leadership is a choice. But it is not a half-hearted option of “let me try first and see”. A true leader commits to doing what it takes to make a difference. People want to be in charge so they can tell others what to do. Instead, there should be a mutual accountability of self and of team. Many leaders forget that leading others should be revered more than anything else. Being the leader means that you have been placed in a position to serve others. Too often, I have seen leaders duck and cover, throw their people under the bus, throw their positional weight around, and instead of leading from a place of service, lead from a place of ego when things get rough. You are privileged to be able to direct, shape, and focus people’s potential to a specific result. When you are given the responsibility to lead, you are given an excellent opportunity to influence many people’s lives positively, a responsibility you should never take for granted. Good leaders are people who have strength of character, which underpins their role as a leader. They are people who are not only conscious of their strengths but more importantly they understand and always keep an eye of their weaknesses. A strong leader is not someone who is full of charisma or someone who dominates those around them. Rather they are someone who is confident in their strengths, weaknesses and purpose. They do not need to go about convincing others of their competence or demanding respect. Their competence is evident to all in the way they conduct themselves and respect is readily given.
