This is an Appeal to all Parents!! For years, Themadhatter4children has been publishing storybooks written for children by children. We have never asked for money or charged them in any form. We propose NEVER to burden either parents or children with financial issues. However, we still need to fund the entire process: Starting with conducting outreach to discover young talent, we visit schools across cities to encourage children to contribute and get their parents to motivate them. Then, from the creative contributions, the board selects talent. Our team then needs to edit for grammar and spelling where necessary, after which another team creates artwork to support the stories. Eventually, we work on the layout of the books, followed by publishing, printing, and distribution. After all this, we have to create PR and marketing activities around each book and publication. All of this costs money. We do not want donations. This is a labour of love. A ebook, callee Children for Change, is edited by Huq and features contributions from more than 80 writers, illustrators, environmentalists and young people including Tom Gates author Liz Pichon, The Gruffalo illustrator Axel Scheffler and TV presenter Chris Packham. The book contains stories, poems, illustrations and features about a variety of topics related to the environment including fast fashion, rewilding and measuring our carbon footprint. It was important that the book was made available for free because there are many children who do not own books, as well as schools that do not have libraries. The Children for Change project is being funded by a national lottery project grant from Arts Council England, and published by Pop Up Projects CIC, a non-profit children’s literature agency. The book includes a poem from former children’s laureate Coelho about repurposing and fixing used items – which he originally wrote on a CD and is shaped in a spiral, with the lines to be read in any order and a piece by Kay about becoming a vegetarian. The closing section of the ebook contains activity prompts and resources to “inspire you to take action, charities you can get involved with, more reading material. The book also includes 10 contributions from winners of the Children for Change young writers competition, run in partnership with The Week Junior.
