Ever felt like your projects were falling flat despite all your hard work? My films didn't have much impact. My stories were too simple and not very exciting. I had a lot of ideas, but most of them weren't very good. Here's why: → Shallow Coverage: They don't dive deep enough into topics. → Single Perspective: Showing only one side makes it less interesting. Here’s what I learned when I started looking from every angle. ↳ Investigate Deeply: Research important people, topics, or parts of life. ↳ Expose Truths: Uncover and reveal hidden truths and conflicts. ↳ Foster empathy: Understand the people and places you explore. ↳ Craft Your Story: Edit and arrange footage to create a compelling narrative. This approach transformed my documentaries Helped me create films that truly resonate with audiences.

▪️ The power of documentaries to change the world In a world awash with information, where every second brings a new headline, social media post or viral video, the art of storytelling remains a potent force for change. Among the myriad forms of storytelling, documentaries have a unique power to inform, inspire and incite action.  ▪️ Shining a light on hidden realities One of the most profound effects of documentaries is their ability to reveal hidden or overlooked aspects of reality. Through meticulous research and compelling storytelling, documentaries such as Blackfish and The Cove have brought global attention to issues of animal cruelty and environmental degradation. These films have not only educated viewers, but also brought about significant changes in policy and public perception.  ▪️ Humanising stories and creating empathy Documentaries excel at humanising complex issues, making them accessible and understandable to a wide audience. Films such as 13th and I Am Not Your Negro delve into systemic racism embedded in society, presenting historical contexts and personal stories that resonate deeply with viewers. ▪️ Inspiring action and advocacy The impact of a powerful documentary often goes beyond the screen and mobilises viewers to take action. "An Inconvenient Truth, for example, did more than educate people about climate change: it galvanised a global movement towards environmental sustainability.  ▪️ Challenging narratives and sparking debate Documentaries also serve as a means to challenge prevailing narratives and spark critical debate. Films such as The Act of Killing and Citizenfour confront uncomfortable truths about power, governance and human rights abuses.  ▪️ Preserving history and culture As well as addressing current affairs, documentaries play a vital role in the preservation of history and culture. They capture moments in time, document cultural practices and record stories that might otherwise be lost. This is well worth a listen to get a good understanding of the sustainable benifits of window film technology

This isn't usually the sort of piece I share on LinkedIn, but I think there's a very important message here about social change and how to inspire people to think or act differently. Simply put, we can't just research and rationalize our way to #sustainability and #equality. Data points and hard evidence are important, yes, but a research paper isn't the right vehicle for showcasing real-world impacts on the people and communities around us. We also need powerful and compelling stories — both non-fiction ones that bring a historical perspective on an important issue as well as fictional ones that challenge us to use our imaginations. I hope more creatives and artists recognize the importance of making more purpose-oriented films and TV shows, from award-winning films like Spotlight and Green Book to eye-opening shows like Extrapolations and Yellowstone. I aim to do my part as well through a soon-to-be-released writing project, so stay tuned! "We must underscore that values-based storytelling is needed now more than ever; to expand the room for debate, to open our hearts to experiences vastly different from our own, to immerse us in the beauty of humanity’s complexities. And in the face of unprecedented change and uncertainty, we need deep partnerships between great storytellers, advocates and movements for change now more than ever, to remind us of our agency in shaping the future and the power of our actions. The future and health of our culture and democracy requires more of us to participate, spread hope, and humanity.
