Peter Schlosser, Vice President and Vice Provost of Global Futures at Arizona State University, reflects on the transformation needed in academic institutions to respond to global challenges in the time frames they demand. #VillarsSymposium #InterdisciplinaryCollaboration #IntergenerationalCollaboration #Education
Kudos to The Villars Institute for sharing this important message from Peter. Rapid translation and dissemination of new knowledge to decision-makers and communities for action is crucial in addressing the impacts of the fast-changing climate. It is also equally important that academic institutions create knowledge and actions that result co-benefits rather than new problems and knowledge and solutions are available to everyone.
Peter Schlosser is a great leader! We are lucky to have him at ASU!
Looking good, Peter! Keep on leading! 💪🏼

3wCouldn’t agree more. If we are serious about speeding up our response to climate change, educational institutions need to speak to one another with more urgency and agency. There are so many high schools doing amazing work in transdisciplinary scientific inquiry but admissions to colleges still insist on siloed Biology, Chemistry and Physics. The flawed metric of GPA still dominates the landscape when our students are producing major capstone projects diving into these problem spaces with maturity beyond their years but these projects are not given their true value when colleges are considering who to grant access to the next level. The amazing work being done by people like Peter and ASU needs students primed (and trained) to think differently, think in systems and beyond systems and this would be facilitated by an overhaul of the admissions process in the USA. We need a network of likeminded institutions willing to take the first step.
