I've just announced funding to establish up to 50 charter schools, including 15 new schools and 35 state school conversions, opening in 2025 and 2026. We're bringing back charter schools and allowing state schools to convert. Charter schools will allow educators the freedom to innovate in response to the unique needs of their communities. One size doesn’t fit all – charter schools will mean a more diverse education system that can respond to the diverse needs of students. State schools fail too many students. Charter schools are subject to higher levels of accountability and can be shut down if they don’t achieve the outcomes they’re funded for.

I'm sharing my letter to the IPS school board urging a moratorium on new innovation charter schools and a deeper look at their impact on our district. As an IPS alum and parent, I've seen firsthand the decline of thriving community schools and strong magnet programs. We need to prioritize a strong IPS for ALL students. Here's the situation: -IPS is becoming the 2nd-most privatized school district in the US, with tons of new innovation charter schools. -This rapid growth is hurting existing IPS schools, causing lower enrollment and less resources. -We need to stop and evaluate the impact of these charters before adding more. What you can do: 1. Sign the Petition - https://lnkd.in/gWnMmHNM 2. Find your IPS school board commissioner https://lnkd.in/gAbzx9ZA. Write them a letter sharing YOUR story and why you're concerned about more charters. Let's fight for a strong, accountable IPS that invests in our students' education!

Alabama is home to rockets, research, and natural resources, but our outdated school funding model holds us back. John Allen, CEO of the Huntsville Committee of 100, emphasizes the importance of investing in education to build tomorrow's workforce. Our 30-year-old funding formula lacks transparency and flexibility. That's why the Huntsville Committee of 100, as a member of the Every Child Alabama Coalition, supports the push for school funding reform. Let's adopt a student-weighted funding formula to ensure every child receives the resources they need to thrive. Read the full article: https://ow.ly/osVa50SHF7E

Nurturing a strong community through meaningful relationships and partnerships for the betterment of children, youth and families.
Yes, classroom learning is important. No one would argue, but what happens when kids go home after school? What do they do on a Saturday or during the summer? Many of us have fond memories of soccer and summer camp, but these programs can be expensive and in many communities, they are few and far between. We must invest in #expandedlearning. ELO programs help students develop critical #SEL skills, many are culturally specific, they offer young people the chance to explore new interests that could lead to a successful career down the road, and they are staffed with caring adults to mentor and advocate for students. In Washington state we are asking our legislators to #fundyouthdev. It is imperative that we prioritize youth in as many ways as we possibly can and this includes #outofschooltime.
Only a small slice of school district pandemic relief funds are being invested in afterschool and summer programs: $5.4 billion to be exact. See data from more than 6,300 school districts’ ARP ESSER spending plans from all 50 states and the District of Columbia and insights from interviews with school district staff and program providers in new report, "Investments in Student Recovery: A Review of School Districts’ Use of American Rescue Plan Funding to Support Afterschool and Summer Opportunities." https://lnkd.in/gCBvddY5
